Well no $$ for new wheels at the moment being that a new house needs to be modded out first I was thinking of painting my stock wheels black. Anyone have any links, info, tips and or paint suggestions, would greatly appreciate it. Or show me some picks if you've done this yourself. Hopeing to just tape my wheel off and spray them down instead of having to take the tire off. I'll obviously be taking the wheel off the car. Here's a link a car at cardomain that shows the look i'm going for. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/689944/1 thanks all
There is a Rex at my work here that painted his. I asked him about them and he said he just sanded, primed them, and painted them with a spray paint he got from an auto store ( like 4 coats). They look great and he said he is on his second winter with them on. He has a white rex and the rim color is something of a dark red-purple. Sounds funny but it looks really nice.
Here's a couple pics with my stock wheels painted black... http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4433
Sweet Thanks for all the info, good to know it is possible and that it looks pretty sweet. Scuba, how did you do yours? Did you take the tires off or leave them on? What type of paint did you use? Thanks
1. tape off wheels 2. lightly sand rim 3. 1 coat of primer 4. 3-4 coats of paint. i used engine enamel because its stronger 5. 2 coats of clear coat. after each coat of primer/paint we put a heater if front to try and "bake" the paint on as much as possible.
In the summer the heater thing really isnt' necessary. Remember...all those coats are LIGHT coats. Very light. In fact, if you ask Justin, the first two coats of color didn't cover the old wheel color completely. You really want to dust it lightly with paint until the entire surface is covered. Same with the clearcoat. Depending on what sort of finish you want. We used 2 coats of clearcoat, but I wasn't going for a high-gloss look. If you want a higher gloss, give it closer to 5 medium coats of clearcoat. Then break out a cup of water and some 2000grit sandpaper and get to wetsanding. A little 3M polishing compound after that and you will have glossy wheels.
Sweet actually powdercoated....i bought them like this.....However, i do have some pretty good scratches, but overall i like the look for winter wheels. once springs rolls around I'll redo these for next season
Thanks Thanks for the rundown Justin, sounds like something I should be able to do. Thanks for all the help, i'll post some pics when I have it complete. Also looking at getting some fog light covers and might tint or spray the sidemarkers as well.
uhh i just painted my wheels like 3 days ago... i used car paint since i work at abra... just do as justin says but be sure to use some sort of wax and grease remover (rubbing alchohol works)...
I bet they would turn out wonderful. I visually liked Justin's wheels much more after he painted them. I would love to do this to my FXT wheels, but I don't think I'll have the patience to do all 4.
i did mine tonight actually, i used black primer and a bronze wheel paint so that its a bit darker, took about 4 hours, the cold weather and unheated garage made them dry bad so im gonna redo it this summer
ok heres what i did with mine... taped off tire (too lazy to break bead) scuffed with 320 grit and wax and grease removed... sprayed sealer then primer then color then clearcoat... here's finished product taken at night 2 days later
sorry crappy pic but i'll get a new one today and post it oh yea and those are color matched (midnight blue metallic) awdimprezaL is the only one on the board to see them up close
You can check out the thread along with pictures of when I painted my rims. http://www.mnsubaruclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3587
Midnight blue metalic Is the mednight blue metalic black for 02-03? I can never forget what the color on my 02 WRX is. I now there is a blue undertone though. Can't wait to see them close ups. Where did you get paint to match? Was it an air can? I still have to get some pics up of my car yet Thanks for the photo link masube81, I thought about doing gold but the stealth look of black just does it for me
