First off what model/year? Second if it's a newish REX, engine management such as Cobb (just came out with a new programmer) and turbo back exhaust. That's the usual first place to start.

Yes, buy used. If exhaust peices don't mate up perfectly, Nathan (wrxboy2003) can work with you. I promise. He also made a custom downpipe for himself and finished with decent power.

Then you would want engine management to boost more lbs. of pressure. I believe that's all you can do with the limit of the 440cc injectors in your engine.

Nope (well, not yet). I usually start with some closed loop logs to check the stock quasi-wideband against the map for accuracy, and then keep an eye on it to make sure that it's pegged rich (ie 11.1:1) towards the end of spoolup. Because of this, I tend to keep the fueling maps rather conservative (~10.5:1 at high loads/rpm). I've found that on my old car that anything leaner than 11:1 in my fuel tables at high loads ends up with EGTs right around 1600*. So with that, I prefer to keep things on the rich side of that to keep the temps down.

When you say "custom exhaust," do you mean that you have something like a homemade catback exhaust?

What kind of budget do you have? That's probably the most important part of this equation. Without it, it's kind of hard to give some good suggestions.

Sounds like your doing the right thing and researching before diving into anything.

A bit off topic, but other questions to ask yourself are...

Is all the scheduled maintenance done? Is it in good shape mechanically? Fluids in good shape? Engine/tranny/rear diff

How long do you plan on owning the car?

    Is it a daily driver?

What do you want out of the car long term?

How much money do you want to spend?

    Popular basic upgrades are...
Tires- If your running stock wheels/tires a good set of upgraded all season tires will do you some good.
Air filter- Drop-in (OEM air box) high flow filter like K&N (as mentioned earlier)
Silencer Delete Elbow- Combination of high flow filter and GP Moto Elbow will help you noise and a very small performance increase.(as mentioned earlier)
Exhaust- Down pipe will give you some noticeable gains. High flow catted pipes will cost you more, but less gas smell and may help you pass inspection if ever needed. Up-pipe is more involved and not recommended unless you're mechanically inclined or can pay someone with experience to do it for you. replacing the up-pipe will give you boost sooner, but you're also taking out the cat.
Suspension springs- Lowering your center of gravity and increasing stability during hard acceleration, braking, and hard cornering.
Brakes- upgraded performance pads like Hawk HPS. You can upgrade the rotors as well for even better braking.

FYI: With stock turbo and Subaru engine management you may want to stay away from things like...
Aftermarket blow off valves (BOV) stock one is good enough
    Turbo timers
    manual boost controllers (MBC)

    good luck!

^^^^Pegged me...I went and bought an 18g and now I am replacing everything and doing a rotated set up. Just sit back, get some cash, go and do it once instead of in stages. If you must do stages I would suggest getting the new AP when it comes out and then when you get a full TBE you can get a protune or Off the shelf map from cobb, stage 2. Good luck with the car

If you have a laptop, buy a tactrix cable. Or pay somebody to hook you up with a Stage I ECU map (260 hp).

Unless you have a downpipe, you can't run Stage II (285 hp).

Oh wait, I should have asked if you NEED more power.

Also, my advice, is to do some research on a performance driving course. This will pull more power potential out of your car, and also more "performance" out of your car by simply knowing how to drive it.

How many miles are on your car? You will want your car to be mechanically perfect before modding. None of this "intake and exhaust over a new timing belt" crap.

sorry for going after you on your grammar. you will however command a lot more respect with posts where people can read what you have to say. It also helps diagnose any problem you may have with the car, etc.

    welcome aboard!
