Pete who are you going to have tune it? I have heard that most big time tuners will not tune a 20G with a 38mm waste gate. They will only do it with a 44mm gate.
Thats the first I've heard of it. The shop I purchased it from said the 38 would be fine for what I wanted to do. I was planning on have Jorge tune it more than likely. I'll investigate futher with him. Thanks for letting me know that actually before I put it on the car and made it a used part
I have a saved copy of a pm in my outbox saying I was running 110 so I hope they shipped the correct one, I will have to talk to them tomorrow.
Nope. The shop shall remain nameless until I hear back from them and I did just send an e-mail to Jorge on this so we'll see what he says.
Let me know what Jorge says. He was one of the main guys I heard that wont tune a 20G on a 38mm wastegate.
20gs are about as big as you want to go with using a 38mm. its really the turning point turbo. any bigger and you for sure want a 44mm, any smaller and you can easily use the 38mm. and yes, you will have to revalve it with a valve that can withstand race gas...unless you already have the race gas version. from my research, the general concensus from most tuners agree with my statement above...there are a few that are very anti-38mm on any turbo though. hope you got one of the URs that actually fit
i just say they suck because they use gaskets. i know plenty of people running them on race gas and they work fine. they just go threw gaskets. the valve does kind of clog a bit but you can clean it out. but a 38 will always work better then a internal waste gate. you do have other options too. turbonetics has a 38 that works well and uses the same flange as the tial.
the whole "38's leak at the gasket" is a myth that needs to stop. for a few years tial was using these paper gasket pieces of crap that gave the 38s a bad rap but for the last year or so they switched to a regular metal gasket and no one really has leaks anymore. turbosmart and synapse are two other options you can go with. we've been working with some of our sponosered cars to test out the new synapse which is supposed to be superior to the diagram style tial/turbosmart...but its been hard to tune boost correctly.
its not a myth if it happens? i know of 3 people that use them and they change them all the time. so not a "myth". but when you sell a kit that uses them you sure would like to think that
It depends on the exhaust housing. Derek was using a 38mm with a GT3076R and the .78 twin scroll housing without issue. This is on a 22T with 2.5 DOHC heads.
and the gasket really isent a big deal. its easy to replace and cheap. plus you dont have to wrestle with those stupid vbands. mine are a pain in the ass!
hey! if you have any other place in my f'ed up build you let me know. right now everything has its spot.
well its a myth that they still leak imo. i have no bias for the 38mm..our 44mm vband will be coming out soon so i could careless who uses what. i'm not disagreeing with you...there are plus's and minus's to both styles of flanges. i personally like the vband for is flexiblity in fitment..you can rotate the wastegate and dumptube however you want.
Yes I lurv me sum race gas :yumyum: Hopefully the shop can work with me on this if Jorge will not tune it. I can deal with replacing gaskets and unclogging the thing if it will work but if I can't get a tune thats not too cool. If I have to go 44mm I will have to get a whole new up-pipe kit and wg which is also not cool. With any luck I'll hear back from the shop and Jorge today.
lol no I just don't post much at work anymore as most days I'm finding I'm busy working. Kind of a crappy deal if you ask me
I'm not much of a welder believe it or not nor do I own a welder. But perhaps I know someone who can
Would something like this work? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turb...009QQitemZ190072799862QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
Good news, the shop is willing to make things right on this so pending a response from Jorge I should be able to get this fixed promptly. Thanks for your help and ideas guys its appreciated. Its a good thing I posted a pic up or I may have ended up not knowing any of this til after it was installed.
Ok so I had Jorge's old e-mail address. I've chatted with him a little bit on this and the 38mm is fine. He said the old ones had gaskets that didn't like race gas but the new ones should be fine. I'm waiting for a response whether or not to swap it to the 44mm in regards to tuning low boost and also spring size. Kevin thought there might be problems with low boost and a 38mm.
i just don't see how a external waste gate will not perform better then a internal? as long as your not pushing a ton of boost you should be fine.
I'm in agreement, besides even if I don't make a huge deal of extra power this year it doesn't change the fact that I don't trust that iwg system on the turbo and want it gone.
That last snow we got was my fault though just becuase I took the car out earlier than I normally do
So after an hour of futzing with the Dtec over Clark's old map, RS Motors got me to 330whp and 345tq with BP 92 before scaling it back a little for the street. It pulls pretty hard so I'm pleased with the results. More than likely I'll be having Jorge tune it when he's here so we'll see how the 110 map turns out
Sweet, that sounds like some fun!! Glad you got everything figured out. You have a dyno sheet to post? I'd love to see the curves.
I didn't get a print out...I can call RS and see if they can e-mail me one or if I could pick one up sometime(I live right by there). The plots I'm more interested in are when Jorge comes to town next month
The up pipe, inlet, turbo, and oil lines are all mocked up. Finally some progress. Gotta figure out the inlet lines next. The GT65 fits in there perfectly and had JUST enough clearance next to the transmission.
