This thread is for posting questions, reviews, and showcasing photography equipment. I carry all my stuff in a promaster backpack - it was cheap and it works. Has the ability to carry both my tripod and monopod on the back as well. layout contents
I've got a nikon d-50 with a 18-200mm VR lens mounted to it and an sb-600 speedlight with stofen omni-bounce diffuser. Looking to upgrade to a d-300 in the future.
It got to the point where I'm out shooting that I needed to have 2 different lenses mounted up (switching lenses is a hassle and a good way to get a dirty sensor) if you look through gear lists on photog forums like potn you'll find a lot of people have at least 2 bodies (I've always had 2 bodies - I just switched out my 300D for another 30D though)
D70s 70-200 f2.8 vr 18-200 TC-17eII Thats about it for now for the big items. Bunch of normal little things, multiple mem cards, extra batteries, glow sticks, flash light, uv filters, tamrac bag. Just saving up for the d300 and sb600 flash. Pics later. Russ
Nothing special, Canon rebel xti kit lens 18-55 50mm 1.8 ebay wireless trigger cheap flash my sister gave me digital grey kard <- well worth it imo really wish I had a 10-22 but I just can't justify it right now.
how about the tokina 10-17? (I sold my super wide angle tamron 11-18, if I was to get another, it would be the tokina 10-17)
ok I'll post my first quick diy this is for a reflector for a hotshoe flash the blueprints are laid out on this page (bottom of the page) http://super.nova.org/DPR/DIY01/ here are the primary parts - foam sheets I bought at michaels the sheets I bought were about twice as large as they needed to be (they should be 12"x9") - cut one to the proper size and then cut it out following the pattern in the link. then use the first piece to trace out the other piece and cut it out staple the two halves together add velcro as indicated in the blueprint presto! you have a flash reflector! will post test shots tomorrow
im looking into getting a new Canon 40D body. its tempting.... ive found a couple good deals. less than 600 dollars for the body. i already have a couple lenses so im not too worried about that for now. but maybe i should spend some money on flashes so i can have better lighting for car shoots.... oh the options!!!!
XTi tamron 17-35 canon 28-135is lowepro stealthmode reporter dw300 or something like that. great bag.
post the websites these "deals" are coming from. sounds like the various scam sites out there (and if it's an individual selling used I wouldn't trust them for that price). b&h or adorama are the only places i order from
http://www.lowpricedigital.com/item...rd=canon_40d&gclid=CNrO29aswJQCFQcqIgodviSJTg i bought my XTi kit through that site and i had no problems.
you got very lucky. check out the reviews for the sites that come up through there - basically all scam operations. check potn too, you'll find quite a few people who have fallen for those deals (bait and switch is one common scam, another is tacking on massive fees for random **** bumping the price to well over that of msrp of the camera. you'll also encounter a lot of grey market units). you might get lucky again mike, but I'd highly advise you buy from a reputable dealer such as b&h or adorma.
one of the cheaper vendors that appears through lowpricedigital is 1wayphoto.... check reviews http://reviews.pricegrabber.com/1wayphotocom/r/7633/ http://www.misdreporter.com/ http://www.resellerratings.com/store/1_Way_Photo
i guess i might have just been the one to fall for a sweet looking deal. maybe i was lucky. but now im in the mood for a new 40D!
stick with the xti until the fall/early winter when canon does all their rebates. or buy a refurbished 30D of adorma for $600 or whatever they are right now (this is how I got my 2nd 30D). or even better - buy some L glass. glass > body, I mean, look at how many potn members still get amazing shots on the 300D
yeah but the amazing clarity of the 40D right out of the box is pretty great too. but i hear ya. maybe ill buy some new lenses and for sure some CPL's!!!!! those are a HUGE help in getting better car shots.
Check out KEH.com. They usually have some pretty sweet deals and the grading system is very customer friendly. I mean VERY customer friendly. Like so friendly that my next piece of glass I get from them will probably be a brg (bargain at 70-79% of new). I picked up my 70-200vr from them and it was like new and it was listed as a EX. Russ
i just got my first CPL filter from national camera and they are having a sale on what looks like over stock. lots of lense filters for pretty good deals. stop by!
GREAT NEWs!!! i was digging through a bunch of old stuff in the house and found an external flash! its suuuuper old but after playing around with it for a while i got it to work. its an old Vivitar auto thyristor 3700. now i need to make something to keep the flash from cutting out half if each shot i take
woohoo nikon in the house. I am using... d70 body with S firmware AF-S Nikkor DX 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G various borrowed from agency lenses (AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR whoops ass, costs as much as a car) bogen manfrotto tripod
Yep. Still have the d70s for now. I will try it as a 2nd body this weekend for the rally. I can hardly wait to blast out 8 fps this weekend. Russ
Russ let me know how you like it. I was debating on getting that or the cannon 1ds mark III. Im not to worried about fps for the shooting I do but quality and features. I like that the D300 has self cleaning sensors and some of the other features are really nice to. Obviously the price range is a little steeper on the cannon but im looking ahead at what im shooting. If I get more requests for photo shoots at these events and more people are buying from me I can justify the $6500 for the cannon. Plus with Nikon and Cannon there are endless lenses available. My sony A700 is 12.2 Megapixel and have had nothing but good luck with it, and am very happy, but it lacks in the lense department and its time for new glass as well. My 35-85mm lense broke on me and my 75-300 is old and showing signs of much wear. A review would be nice after this weekend
1d and d300 isn't a very good comparison. 1d to d3 is better and that's still pretty much a wash. if i wasn't already tied to canon i'd be on a d300 for sure.
like i said. im a canon fanboy. kinda like how honda guys are. they think honda is the greatest no matter what
Dave, will do. Not sure what I am doing yet (sweep or marshal), so it could be up in the air on how much photo time I get. As for which on is better, at this point it is a matter of which camera does what you want it to do. When I was shoot film, I had nikon, so when I went digital I already had nikon glass. Definitely helped keep costs lower. Now with the better body and spendy glass, I really can't afford to swap to canon and knowing that I don't even keep up on what is different with canon and nikon. Russ
yeah im the same way, I read a little on each here and there, but I might just get a D300 and some new glass and use that for my telephoto and keep my sony for close ups. I need you to build me that computer b4 anything though. Cant wait to c your pics from this weekend! Dave
I posted up some more pics in the Ojibwe thread. All just raw to jpeg converted dumps from the camera. I will hopefully get some time to play around this week and clean them up a bit. 9fps is FAST. WOW. But the camera is pretty great. The focus is sooooo fast compared to the d70s and everything just seems to be spot on. Now I just need to improve my skillz and my photoshop skills so I can finish off some of these photos in style. I definitely need a faster piece of glass for the up close stuff. I was using my 18-200 for all of that, and it worked out ok, but just couldn't keep up with the close range and speed of the cars. The 70-200 worked like a charm and I got some pretty good pics of the drivers in the car as they speed on past us. Lots of potential, so I just need to start snapping and really dive into the post shoot touch up stuff. http://subiewrx.smugmug.com/gallery/5788150_d8bLD#358286424_o9yJf Link to this weekends pics. Also, when do we want to have a photog meet?? Maybe a little photoshop school and such. Russ
40d 30d 80-200mm 50mm wide angle 8mp point and shoot mamiya medium format 645 home made large format the list goes on and on...
50d Was at National Camera yesterday checking out Xsi/40D and the sales guy mentioned early October for 50D release. We'll see of course.
