film is cool. id love to get back into it but it takes so much more time and equipment to do it properly. plus i love having the preview screen so i can retake anything if i need to.

im so pumped for the 40D price to drop. i want one so badly its crazy. how much do you think it will go down?

    40D price

A couple weeks ago there was a $200 rebate on the 40D putting it at $899 or a little less for the body at places like Amazon.com. I would have to imagine that it wouldn't dip too much lower than that so that it doesn't take away from Xsi sales.

Also I believe the 30D is going for $699 at Rtizcamera last I checked. Still a solid camera for the price.

yea I'd honestly buy a 30D over a 40D right now. the 50D is a large enough improvement over the 30D that it's worth upgrading to

5D prices aren't terrible right now but that's still a hefty chunk of change. maybe when the next gen 5D hits the shelves...

Yea, they're not bad compared to what they were. Just don't have the cash. I'll have to wait a while, see what happens with the next gen.

d300 has a little better value (for it's price) but when you're watch sporting events and see the sea of white L glass... there must be a reason why that is

this is true. canon pretty much has had a strangelhold on sports photography but the new nikons have quickly caught up in that segment. I think nikon has been doing a much better job of improving each generation recently than canon.

+1 to this! I have been holding off hoping for a price drop. Although this 50d sounds interesting. Stupid new things, why do they have to be so appealing.

    New Camera

The wife surprised me with a Canon Xsi last week and couldn't be more happy with the upgrade to my Canon powershot. Turning out great pics. For the price and feature set of the camera i'm more than impressed. Came with the kit lens so the saving begins for lenses. Also have a 50mm 1.8 in the bag that should work nicely as well. Been comparing the Xsi to my dads 30D and have to say the little Xsi can sure hold its own. Only things missing when compared to 30D/40D is more fps/higher iso and a sturdier body but the grip is largely improved over the Xti thats for sure.

Perfect timing as well with the new family member, having your first child is the perfect time for a new camera.

Now for a shoot with my suby....coming soon

As for the kit lenses 18-55IS with the XSI and 28-135IS with the 40D, depends if 28mm is wide enough for ya. The 18-55IS kit lens will still turn out great pics. Wish I had the cash for a 40D but I'll live with the Xsi for now. Smaller package yet just as good IQ as the 40D.

I saw there were a couple 40D's on craigs for decent deals a few days back.

any recommendations for a decent / good lense for the Xt???

My pics are ok.. I am by NO means a photographer... but I really want to get some of the detail in my pics that you guys seem to be able to capture.. would also love more zoom, and more close up.. so I guess a couple of different lenses are in order

    zoom

I've heard good reviews for the 55-250mm IS f/4.0-5.6 lens. A decent zoom lens with IS that won't break the bank.
    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-55-250m...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1223671031&sr=8-1

or for a bit more$$ and a bit more zoom and a bit more $$$ you could get a 70-300mm canon 70mm-300mm IS lens
    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-300m...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1223671218&sr=8-1

beyond the above you're looking at spending much more $$$ and moving into the L glass.

For my first zoom I think i'll be picking up a canon 55-250 IS. The 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L lens is on my wish list.http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-200m...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1223671320&sr=1-1

Picked up that Nikon D70 from Russ. Matched it up with the Nikon lenses I already had. Wishing I hadn't sold that 80-200 Nikon lens I had. Oh well. Does Sigma still make decent lenses? I've been out of the game for a while.

    I run with a D40 + 18-55mm kit lens and a D300 + 18-200mm VR.

D40 is amazing and inexpensive. Only gripe is the limited lens selection (no AF motor in body).

D300 can take pictures that no other digital camera can. I can point it directly into the sun without a polarizing filter or neutral density filter and the sky doesn't get overexposed (disc of sun does, of course) plus I still get foreground detail, like lines of tree leaves. OMFG.

Of course, I didn't feel like I had the D40 mastered until after about 6 months of use. Who knows when I'll feel the same about the D300. There's a lot to it.

The 18-200mm is better for a walk-around paired with the D40. The D300 deserves more specialized (read: fewer compromises) glass.

VR is is awesome. I can shoot down to 1/4s hand-held and still get nearly half of my photos without blur. The only time I even think about a tripod with the VR lens in for long-shutter night shots.

The D300 also is great at ISO 1600 and acceptable at ISO 3200, so there's rarely a situation I can't shoot well hand-held.

Now if only it was a full-frame sensor. :yumyum::yumyum::yumyum:

Canons are fine, I just never felt they were very durable. But that was in 96. Maybe they've changed since then. The Nikons always felt solid. Plus, Russ (as well as myself) is a Nikon guy. So he's going to be biased.

So far my only complaints with the XSi are that it is very very light, and that the grip is kind of small. Both of these wouldnt have been issues if I went with the 40D, so I cant complain too much. Being light weight is a benefit, but it just doesnt feel as durable, who knows it is probably close to as durable as a magnesium framed camera.

This weekend I am heading to the cabin, I am excited!

The problem with the 35mm cameras was that the Canons were made entirely of plastic. Yes, they are very light for sure, but as such, they couldn't be dropped ever. We always had tons of Canon SLRs in the shop for repairs. The Nikons were made of metal, and while heavy, would withstand some serious abuse.

Again, Canon makes good cameras, I'm sure of this, but I like my cameras to be very durable. Plus, once you settle in on a Canon or a Nikon, it is hard to change brands since most of hte lenses can be transferrred to the next camera you buy...unless you were a sucker and bought a Minolta, lol.

I thought this as well. This is my first DSLR and I thought it would be bigger in my hands. I ended up just buying a BG-03 off eBay and that has made the unit much more usable IMO.

Indeed. The xxD line is magnesium body and are quite hefty and durable feeling. Alas I could fork over the extra moolah for a 40d. I think that this XSi will be fine for me for awhile. Down the road, a xxD camera would be nice.

That lens is nice. A friend of mine has that lens and I've used it on many outings. I going to hopefuly get the 2.8 IS this summer with my refunds if the car does not need that money.

yeah i want the 2.8 is but its WAY more money to drop. the one im getting is only $670. im excited to have F4 at 200mm. that will be nice. im planning on getting another L lens this summer too. maybe the 50mm F1.2L. it might be one of my favorites. tried it out once. sooooooo sharp and clear.

i read something about that lens last night. its not made anymore but its supposed to be really nice. hold onto it.
