plasti-dip entire car

has anyone on here plasti dip their car? im thinking about going that route. but im a little concern about when it comes down to cleaning and washing the car....will it rip off? how it will hold against sun ray and other natural stuff. some feedback will greatly be appreciate! thanks

There's an STI on iwsti.com that was coated in plasti dip for a couple of months. When removed it took a lot of the oem clear coat with it. I've seen a couple instances of this around the web.

^ I have only seen one instance, on iwsti. Also we have no idea how they applied it and what company/mixture of plasti dip they used. There are hundreds/thousands of cars that use the dipyourcar.com products with zero issues reported.

 

To follow up that point... i have my emblems done (cheap plastic chrome), front grill and have done work on other cars... including non-subaru cars. None have had any issues.

 

There's no doubt a bunch of people have had awesome results. However when something like this happens people should know. I believe Dip your Car offered the guy 3k in compensation as well.

I like this stuff but, not sure if I like it enough to put it on my nice cars. I did the header panel on my jeep and the stuff is way tougher than I thought it was going to be.

 

I read through the same or a similar thread on nabisco. My opinion is that the car's been regularly buffed for most of it's life, which is great. But he covered thin, brittle, possibly sun baked clear coat with thick (Relatively speaking)Plasti-Dip. So when he took it off, the plasti-dip won the "who's more adhesive" game.

I know a guy that did his whole Galant in Plasti-Dip and it looks great.

 

The clear coat issue comes from how you thin it. I personally am planning on doing my whole car as soon as the weather is nicer. I purchased the whole car kit and had them thin the dip for me.

Depend on when you dip it, I may be willing to lend you a hand. I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about the process.... vs the emblems and rattle can stuff I have done. I really want to see their kit/sprayer in action.

 

Pictures!! I don't have any solid experience with Plasti-Dip, so I'm interested in how big of difference properly mixed paint makes.

Here is the kit I have purchased. I talked with their customer service and they told me that the more coats I put on (evenly mind you), the more durable and easier it would be to come off and touch up if needed. That is the reason I went with the large car/extra coverage kit. Oh and I am doing camo green. Should look pretty good with the new wheels.

 

That's a pretty fair price for all that you get. I didn't know they made a gloss product though. I tried a quick Google search and couldn't really find any decent pictures of gloss plasti-dip. Unless this is considered to be their gloss mix.





In the second picture the door looks really uneven. Or is it just a shadow or reflection? It looks fine in the last picture, so maybe it's fine.

If you have a good feel for spraying paint this seems like a no brainer because last I checked I couldn't get my car painted for at least 10x that price.

 

The 2nd pic does look uneven. Difficult to tell but almost looks like an up and down spray pattern rather than a side to side.

 

Assuming that the BMW pictured is the gloss mix and the door isn't uneven I'd be all for dipping the Legacy!

 

There is a chick on 3G/NASIOC that did her car gloss white. It looks good.

 

I know the big benefit of Plasti-Dip is being able to spray right over existing paint/clear. But I wonder what difference (if any at all) it makes to sand it down and prime it beforehand. I would think it'd look even better? I'm not a paint guy so I don't know how this stuff works lol.

 

^if your going to sand and prime, finish it with a single stage paint.

 

What's the price comparison of a full car Plasti-Dip to a single stage paint? I would think Plasti-Dip is more forgiving in a less than ideal painting environment.

 

I wouldn't sand and prep like regular paint. Also, it defeats the purpose.

Those are probably the best looking dip mixes I've seen. It looks like actual automotive paint, not Krylon.

Actually I work a lot with Graco ( paint not the baby stuff) Wagner, and Sata Spray with my pneumatic product line. I'm really interested in "application" aka spraying of this stuff. If it is consistency and viscosity is similar to most paints?

 

Tim you should contact them.

 

They make this liquefying solution too. Granted it still requires spray, but it makes for a better finish. If you have a non-smooth surface it will show.

 

The stuff is pretty dope, I wouldnt dip my entire car though, I might try dipping the zed black for a bit, just to change it up a bit.

 

If it had an oem paint job, this paint is farr to chippy, I dont want to pull layers of it off. If I dipped it, I'd try to get as close to british racing green as possible.

 

I was the one that did your car. it looked a thousand times better after. And lets be honest. You cant polish that turd. That car looked like a pile before, and after the dip.

The body was SO rough, even if I applied 20 coats, it would have been permanent.
