Please help! TPS sensor

    Car: 2002 WRX wagon

    Modifications: catless up pipe, catless TBE, and grim speed EBC, Aftermarket turbo inlet

    Problem Description: I managed to break my Throttle position sensor and after replacing it, it still idles high and its throwing a code (probably the same one) Can I reset the ECU without ruining a week old tune? Is there anything special you need to do with the Tps?

    Recent Modifications/Maintenance: turbo inlet hose

    Did you originally clear the CEL after you replaced it? So this is a 'new' light?

    Resetting the ECU by unhooking your battery isn't going to harm your tune.

    Yes I undid the battery and hit the brake but I only did it for about a minute. Maybe this wasn't long enough/do you need to adjust the sensor or not I keep seeing different answers?

    Now car is in limp mode. Idled at 2000rpm and won't go past 3000. Any ideas?

    Is it set correctly? Replacing the TPS is not as simple as removing old and installing new, it has to be adjusted so the signal is correct at closed throttle.


    Get a code reader, and find out what the CEL code is. Clearing the codes wont effect your tune.

    How do you adjust the signal? I didn't do that so its more then likely the problem.

    You will need a reader so you can check and see what it is reading for a throttle position then you adjust the sensor from there.

    I'm sorry man, but this is fairly basic. Google it, buy a repair manual, etc. Almost every car on the road in the last 30 years has a TPS that requires calibration in a similar fashion.

    The Factory Service Manuals are available online for free in several places (my favorite is www.jdmfsm.info ), which walks you exactly through the process, and has the exact spec in it.

    A Check Engine Light means it's trying to tell you what's wrong. Find out the code (most auto parts stores will read it for free), and then look it up in the FSM, which will walk you through exactly how to test every related component without spending a dime on parts.

    You can do it both ways. Best way is with a volt meter yes.

    Okay so I understand how to adjust it but when it's at .5v the screws are not even close. How do you get it to adjust and have the bolts line up?

    Can someone please tell me which wires to test the voltage? Is it the yellow one on the plug in for the sensor?

    Not trying to be a dick here but if you still cant figure out how to do this it may be time to just have someone that does know take care of this for you. Be there learn from them so next time it happens you can fix it.

    I found the problem out last night. They sent me a part that's spring in the middle was loaded at the wrong angle so new ones on the way.
