Today I was driving to work in my 98 rs and the duct temp inside dropped down to outside temp. Then my temp gauge spiked. Then all of a sudden my heat returned and my temp gauge dropped. This happened once before so now i'm getting a little concerned. The car just broke the hundo mark and to my knowlegde head gaskets have never been installed. The radiator level is full and the overflow is also normal. On the top of the overflow there is an oilly residue on it that is why i'm suspecting that a head gasket is starting to go. What do you all think?? If I were to call the suby dealer do I need to specify for the better head set or is that just a givin?

I think what bikerboy is trying to say is that you need to have your thermostat replaced because it's worn and sticks open/closed every now and then. It's located under the engine where the fat rubber hose from the bottom of the radiator connects to. It's inside that dome housing. :D

Yes, if your headgasket was bad it would have to run outta antifreeze for you to see your temp gauge spike like that, and there would be LOADS of smoke. I'd get a thermostat.

Ditto. In fact, CLOUDS of smoke behind you. Just remember, white is water, blue is oil.

I saw a car in Gary once that was like Knight Rider. The smoke screen was too thick to see through. AND it was oil.

I had a Ford Taurus ... it had a nice smoke cloud behind it as well. Mine had a broken piston ring.

My dad's old Iroc had bad valve seals. When you'd start it there would be a cloud of smoke that billowed out of the exhaust. I mean, this cloud was big enough to obscure a house. It was hilarious!

Now it sends up white clouds of smoke from the rear tires. Scoggin-Dickey crate 350 with Vortec heads. Over 360/420.

Back on topic, your thermostat is proly dying. Could just be rusted and sticking. Time for a new one!
