So, last night I got home, and my mileage on my 05' STi was right around where it should be--as there was a 1/4 tank left. I planned on getting gas today, which I generally do around 1/4 tank. I live in the Midway area at an apartment/loft complex, and unfortunately don't have garage or underground parking. I got in my car today, started it, and the gas light was on--and it was on E. I don't park on a slope or anything either. I drove for a bit thinking maybe it just briefly came on and would go off, but it stayed on til I got to the gas station. I don't see any possible leaks or anything like that going on... I guess it isn't totally out of the question for theft, as stuff like this is happening a lot lately, but whatever happened--it sure was sneaky and without a trace. Someone siphoning maybe? Watch your cars!
its nearly impossible to steal gas from a modern car let alone a subaru....I think you are high as a kite.
hardly impossible... and I am not high. I actually have OCD, and I check guages and other nonsense like that all the time... It went down a lot overnight.
possible, but my mileage was exactly where it should be at that level of tank...where is pretty much always is. anyways...just a heads up to others.
Stealing gas from a modern car is mor ethan a siphon. Need an actual pump, which is too $$$ for the reward. Theves tend to drill the tank these days (yes, fire hazard, but theres are meth addicts we're talking about)
there was a story on kstp about some vehicle that has a device that pulls up next to cars..and they don't even need to get out of the car. a mechanical arm of sorts comes out and opens everything up and is able to get gas out. just keeps hitting random cars. I live about a mile from firestone. crackheads are always asking me for money in the parking lot. and they steal bikes and other stuff quite often. couple cars got stolen...broken into. etc.
I don't think you need to break it... I have been able to pop open subaru gas doors without the inside lever, just by pushing on it a certain way. I did on my old legacy, but not this one. Same mechanisms though.
yeah I dunno, it was odd. maybe something on it was messed up on the old car, but it opened without pulling the floor lever.
Well I guess it could depend on how old your LGT was and how new your current car is. Maybe the lock just wore out.
I remember how difficult it was for me to try and take the gas out of a car I was going to salvage to the yard and I discovered there is a ball they put inside the gas line between the fill hole and the tank, its designed to float back up when you the tank is full so the fuel will stop filling causing back pressure. So its interesting to hear theives getting around this. Time to get a gas cap with a key/lock. The last story I heard was a cop getting his pickup gas syphened, huge gas thanks on those trucks.
yeah, that wouldn't surprise me... things like that aren't made to last forever, so it probably was something like that. I guess I may never know what happened. My building does have security cameras, but I am pretty positive I was parked out of range of the ones, as I got home so late and got like one of the last and worst parking spots in the lot. I checked with them and they are going to pull footage and see if I am on it.
Go go gadget arm-gas-stealing-thingy.... LOL... I have treid to siphon gas out my WRX. I had no luck. I think the ball thing is true.
Yeah...I know it is difficult, but it is possible. Some crooked people are spending the time and money to get something going that can steal that gas. I know of the ball thing, but sometimes that ball doesn't seem to do its thing. Just the other day, I was at the pump and the stopper on the handle at the pump was missing, so I had to manually fill, and usually even at the end, I top it off a little and if its about to be full, it will stop letting you pump it in...but the other day, some gas started spilling down onto the ground. So that ball may not be 100% reliable, at least in my situation. Apparently some people have even hit gas stations and actually robbed from the underground tanks. Imagine pulling that off...:eek4:
Hey we might start hearing about how theives are hijacking gasoline trucks. For gang initiations. LOL
No kidding... if the demand gets high enough, which it already pretty much is. ****, I paid $4.14 a gallon for 93 today. Depressing and painful. :ugh:
Get rid of my 4 door dings for me and I'll give you 4 free tanks of gas. :laugh:Since that's how much it already cost to get a full tank of gas.
They will roll in black honda civics with green underglow. Watch for vtec AND nos for quick getaways.
valid point after the fact...but how would they know how much was in there in the first place? anyways...we will see if the footage brings up anything... otherwise, maybe the sending unit was stuck, but I doubt it considering everything was spot on for the whole 200 plus miles, and then suddenly it went to E.
You just got Tuxed. Probably the fuel level sensor or fuel tank shape. Sounds pretty normal to have inaccurate readings. FWIW whenever I put high octane in, I drive on the pump gas until the gas light goes on, then put 5 gallons in. It's taken up to 5 miles for the gauge to move and the light to turn off.
this proves to those other people that it is not "impossible" to steal gas from a modern vehicle. I thought maybe it was you nuke. :eek4:
The subaru gas guages are real goofy, all 3 of the subaru's I have had all acted differently. I find it hard to believe somebody stole gas from your car let alone only a couple gallons.
I have noticed a couple of times that when I go fill up, it wants to stop pumping, and then it will usually fit more. sometimes the guage won't show it as full, even after the pump stops. the odd part is that I have actually been able to add more even if it clicks to shut off...sometimes even a few gallons more. that makes me think that it is a defective pump though, rather than something with the car. well...i'll believe anything given where I live, but you never know. I live in the heart of midway right on Uni by firestone. never know...
I think the fact that you have had this problem diminishes the possibility that someone siphoned gas outta ur car,
If you can fit more gas in there after it clicks.... *really wild idea here*...... MAYBE ITS NOT FULL! Nobody stole your gas, get a locking gas cap if you want, I would be willing to bet you'll have this problem again.
if you read my post...you would understand. obviously its not full. thats why I am able to add more sometimes. the pump stops pumping... the car has more room. I end up getting it full by manually adding more even though the pump stops. why don't ya stop being so harsh in all of your responses...everything you say is fairly unhelpful---at least to me. the whole point of this forum is to help people out...if you have nothing helpful to say..try beefing up your post count elsewhere.
You should take it in to the dealer so they could check it out, it could escalate to something worse.
