Apparently the new G009 replacement tire, what do you folks think of the tread design for dirt / snow use? (I'm willing to give up excellent dry grip, for now)

Thinking about pulling the trigger, to replace my balding RE92's .. only have money for one set of tires :ugh:

    Interesting.

Looks like it wouldn't be so great for ice/snow.

There's not enough siping, IMHO. But then again I'm no tire engineer. :)

The G009 is a great tire. It handled very well in snow until you get down to the harder compound. The first winter I had them was great after that not so good. I would expect similar performance from these.

The G009 was a pretty good tire for Rally-x use. I heard lotsa of good things about using them for gravel/dirt use. Again after you get down there on tread depth the dirt performance will suffer.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm going for... a rally-x tire that's DDable year round (again, money being the issue there)

Any other tires fit the bill, or are these two the ones to have?

the G009 is a great all season. I was able to get mine real cheap, and that was the first year they came out. It was like $60ea OTD I think. If you are running a stock size (preferably 15") these are a great buy. If the G019 is the new replacement I would keep an eye out for places to be clearing out the G009 and see if you cant pick up a set real cheap.

Since you asked for any other thoughts, here are mine:

Having had the wonderful experience of the Nokian Hakka RSI's all winter I was considering something from Nokian in an All-Season version for summer as I need a DD tire that can do gravel frequently. They make AS tires with the Hakka siping so I figured it was what I was looking for.

However, before I got serious enuf to figure out the exact model and order, I got a deal on a very slightly used set of Potenza 960AS's that I couldn't pass up. I still woulda probably preferred some Nokians but budget dictates and these were cheaper.

Just my .02. Good luck, eh!

I had these on my Grand Am, they replaced worn out toyos, they are awesome dry street/track tire. First snow I thought they were good for stopping and turning on ice/snow, but accelerating was was horrible. After putting blizzaks on some steelies I found it was just the car, blizzaks were better but not a whole lot.

The Nokian WR G2's, you mean? I thought about those, but since they're built on a snow tire's carcass... I am kinda hesitant, squishy sidewalls and all that (not sure how that factors into rallyX, I'd imagine popped beads more often than not)

The nokian all seasons are not as good in the high heat conditions. however for rally-x they would be very awesome.

I had not settled specifically on which model. The WR's and the WR-G2's both looked interesting but so did one or two of their other summer tires. But, like I said, the Potenzas came along before I had the Nokians sorted and I got them cheap enough to end my search.

If the Nokian's don't handle hot weather well as Dynapar stated, that is a definite minus. That's the kind of info I was starting to look for but hadn't found yet.

yeah it all depends on what your priorities are. I was really considering getting a set of G009s again for my summer tires, but in the sizes I was looking at it was just cheaper to get the falkens. the G009 gives versatility where the falkens dont. I would have liked to be able to hit up some rally-x w/o needing to change tires.

The nokian all seasons will preform head over heels better in snow than the G009s but they wont take the heat as well. depends on what your priorities are.

G009s are now 25% off at tires plus.
