Sometime this spring/early summer I'm looking to do an auto to manual swap in the forester (01). I will need a pedal set and a transmission and maybe a couple more things to make it work. Realistically, what am I looking at as far as cost for parts if I want to keep it at a minimum? I know qstarin helped someone out on rs25 with their planning, what would my best choice be if I had no plans on upgrading the motor any time soon? Not sure if this is in the right place for discussion either sorry.
It is a pretty easy swap to do. id assume the forester will be somewhat similar to a wrx or any other subaru, maybe a few differences. im not sure of the gear ratio's in the forester. what trans do you want to put in it? as for the "correct" place to post, have a mod move it to: Modifications/Maintenance/Technical Discuss your mods, maintenance, and any other technical information/questions
thanks for the input, as far as which one to put in, I suppose cheapest would probably be any n/a subaru 5spd from forester/impreza/legacy right? would these all bolt up with no problem, or do i need to stay 2.5 specific? If I did find a cheaper wrx 5 speed, what advantage would this have over a sf forester 5spd with my stock ej25?
you will need: pedal assembly, clutch master cylinder and all the pipe, braces etc., clutch slave cylinder, and line, the tranny, all shift linkage parts/bushings etc. Potentially a new drive shaft (i am not sure because it's a forester) and a new rear differential to accommidate whatever the final drive is on the new transmission.
Driveshaft I'm pretty sure you'll need - the 4EAT and the 5MT are different lengths, so the driveshaft's need to be, too. Cheapest I'll guess is whatever deal pops up at the time. Obviously, you can save money by finding a tranny with a final drive ratio that matches what you have. Also, the tranny case design changed somewhere in the 90's. That caused me a couple of minor issues because I got an early 90's one for my 01 - missing exhaust hanger, for example. If you want to keep ABS it would seem you'll need the ABS unit for an MT (the pump or possibly just the electronics under the hood).
I would look for a OBS in a junk yard, or for one of those "I just swapped, now I'm selling the leftovers 'cause i'm broke" sales and hope they're localish. to Q: I didn't know they make subaru auto trannys with final drives that match any of the manuals?
Yeah - they got 4.111 autos and manuals for sure. I'd have to dig up a NASIOC FAQ or something to be specific on years and models (like this one: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181343). I know my auto was a 4.44 and I'm pretty sure some JDM 5MT's are 4.44 too. Don't think any auto's are 3.9 or the weird 1:1.1 transfer deal with a 3.454 or somthing rear. I'm far from an expert on these things, though.
it's good stuff to know, I'd hate to end up with the wrong part or worse, direct someone else to the wrong part.
