Hey, guys! I did a search and found nothing about it on here so I decided why not post about it. The family car is insured with Progressive insurance. Some of you who have Progressive insurance (cheapest rate that I know of by the way) probably was asked to use or is using this optional device in your car. I was talked into it by a Progressive operator lady and today I received delivery of the device. This Progressive operator lady said that it will guarantee me a 5% discount on on my premium and told me that it will only help me with possible larger discounts and not harm me. What are your thoughts on it? **By the way, why is "barrel-chested women" one of the top 70 search terms?
I've got a couple of the boxes that they use for this. They're basically OBDII data loggers. And they log things like "excessive" and "extreme" acceleration and breaking, and how many times you go over a pre-set speed limit, etc. I don't know what parameters Progressive uses or what thresholds they use, but the stock settings for the device are pretty laughable. It would record several "extreme" events in a quick trip to the grocery store in my WRX. IIRC they also log when they are connected and disconnected, so you can't unplug it and go have a little fun without them knowing. Can't harm you? What happens when you have a little accident, a claim, and then the little box tells them you were performing "extreme" acceleration just before it? OTOH, depending on what software you got with the box, you might be ableto use it to pull codes
yea, i don't think i would EVER use that box... i have progressive as well, but i get a fat discount b/c i have 5 cars, 2 motorcycles, and 2 houses under my policy. i think the normal amount is 580/6 month, but i pay like 420/6 months due to discount. i would much rather pay the 5% and drive my car with a few "extremes" then to save 5%... Aj
Progressive Auto Insurance? Make sure you dont get moving violations or else your premium will rocket away.
Am fam just sky rocketed my premium to $2200 for the next 6 months. I didn't know about this box, but I think that even I will stay away from it. I've found unitrin is still cheaper than progressive even with a 5% discount for the box.
Those things cause MAJOR problems in newer cars. MANY Lexus have come in here with the WEIRDEST symptoms with those in the OBD2 port.
Yeah, we saw weirdness with one in our Volvo (that was a POS anyway). But I never saw any issues with them in my 02 WRX. (I was using the same hardware, the "Davis Carchip" but not for the insurance company).
I bit the bullet and installed it. After my drive to work this afternoon, I checked my acct status and I have a 10% discount rate at renewal. Keep in mind, my driving style is quite conservative and I don't have a road rage problem. I'll report anything I notice or experience from this device on this thread.
I think moving violations will greatly increase your insurance premium no matter what ins company you're with. By the way, another Progressive operator lady today told me that exccessive stopping and starting doesn't happen on a normal drive and excessive speeds count at 75+ mph. It's okay if these happen very occasionally; just not all the time.
You're giving up your freedom/liberty to drive in a manner you wish so that BIG BROTHER can monitor you for WHAT!#@# ALL of a 5% discount??? That's just assinine and plain stupid. What is up with people wanting more intrusion into their lives by the Government, Insurance companies, or any other entity. Stay the F*** out of my life and my affairs. I'll get down from my soapbox now.
Am Fam was decent to deal with when I got hit in August. They accounted for my wheel and bent coilover. I hear many horror stories from body shops in dealing with Proggressive. They won't buy new parts for your car, or cheap crap from China.
3 of my vehicles were damaged, amfam payed right away, and we had them fixed within a month...I will continue to support amfam.
i have progressive made the call 730am...got a call from a rep at 8:30am and the tow truck is on its way now be here at 11....i think not to shabby....so far we'l see how the rest pans out
For them paying for my car yes they did that right away. For them resolving my case and pay for my medical bills thats a different story. It took 3 years going back in forth with them in court. I was t-boned by a drunk driver who was a illegal alien and had no insurance.
If you guys only knew how I drive around the place. Besides, with the family car (02 Accord 4-banger), there's not an urge to want to drag race or drive aggressively. With this installed, I think it'll reduce any unneccessary wear & tear on the vehicle. I mean, who can afford getting into an accident? We'll see as the snow melts. If you track your car, drive at high speeds often, or if you are overly defensive when you're behind the wheel, you'd probably want to pass on this. Update: my projected renewal discount has risen to 11.1%. (with all else being equal in my policy) Yes!
Sorry about your accident. %^&* happens. The reason why I went with Progressive and got out of State Farm was the opposite. I was told from a number of sources that Progressive has a reputation for taking care of their customers. That's strange to me.
Progressive did me right after my accident this past spring. It was very easy to work with them and Morrie's body shop to get my repair done without hassle. Lifetime guarantee on the repair (not sure if they do that for all shops or just some like dealers - they had an adjuster who's like permanently stationed at Morrie's body shop. lol) and I've already called them on that twice without hassle. Morrie's asked me straight up if I was okay with non-OE parts and I said no. End of story, no hassle from Progressive or Morrie's. Also, one of my undisclosed aftermarket speakers got damaged (most likely during the repair, IMO). I called Progressive the day I picked up my car (only noticed cause they left the speaker disconnected and I had to take the door apart) and with 0 hassle told me to pick up a new set and give them the receipt. Reimbursement for that was very fast. It did take a 7 months for fault to be determined - but that was likely because it went to arbitration. In the end they determined it to be 100% the other drivers fault, so I assume Progressive represented me/themselves well enough.
Pretty much everyone at Luther collision hates progressive, along others at various abra's, etc. Basically, they don't have the best reputation with people I the auto collision industry. This is what I've been today several body techs.
I have progressive on 6 cars, they are good at getting out to look at the car but they sukk at paying. I wanted my car done at a certain body shop and as soon as I said I have progressive he cringed. If the body shop says its going to be $5k to fix progressive says the will pay $4k. They pay what they think its worth. I have a metting with all state farm on Monday to switch my cars and house with them.
I've had nothing but good things to say about Progressive. From what I've heard, it's the shops that they treat like crap.
^ That's what I'm getting at. Would you trust a shop on their opinion on how to fix it correctly, or some adjuster. It is almost standard that once the shop tears into the car, there are more repairs to be made. Some insurance companies are fine with the added cost. Others are not, and to me, that makes or breaks the company.
My awesome driving skills have again increased my projected discount rate at renewal. It is now at 16.1%. Once again, part of the discount is due to the number of times I drive in a day, the time I spend driving under 75 mph, limited times I suddenly start/stop the car, etc. See if this works. Here's a link from progressive about my driving status. https://onlineservice-yourpolicy1.progressive.com/scripts/MyRateTripAveragesReport.aspx
In the wholesale business, I know some shops dont care much for progressive...if a part can only be had OEM, they want it yesterday, and wont pay for the extra money it costs to get the parts here fast. I sure as hell am not gonna eat hundreds of dollars in overnight fees because an insurance company wants the stuff fast.
progressive has been good to me so far...i too have talked to a lot of body shops and i know that they hate dealing with them, but as long as you fight for what you want you will get it. Remember you get to pick the shop you bring it to, and do not have to take it to the shop they want. Just be picky and dont let the inssurance companies walk all over you
I guess I've always been with State Farm and they do me very well. They have always paid out very quickly (most of the time the same day) for any of my claims. They have by far been the best value for me. I have 2 cars, a motorcycle and a house on my policy with pretty substantial coverages and a $250 deductable and I pay a little over $100 a month. This is full coverages that are higher than the minimal limits. My rates have changed between $5-10 per month, above and below, my original rate from 10 years ago. I've had one accident that was a 50/50 that totalled my old Talon. They paid out top dollar for it and I never saw a substantial increase in my premium. In my dumb days, got a careless driving ticket for street racing at Red Rock and it never increased. And they did find out about it too. Along with the second one I got 3 years later. They have treated me very well so I will definately stay with them. I've heard good and bad about Progressive so I can't say whether or not they are good company from personal experience. I guess it depends on your particular situation. As it does with all insurance companies. You don't cause them problems, most of the time they won't cause you problems.
Wow. Do you go through a broker or particular agent? That sounds like what I think car insurance should be like.
No broker, but my agent is a local one. I've been with them for over 10 years so I get discounts for years of loyalty and being accident and ticket free. Plus the multi-car and multi-line discounts are really good. Not to mention I'm 34 years old and own my own home. Your rates have a lot to do with your credit score, your commute and which town you park in at night as well. About 6 months ago I was even with them as far as how much I've paid in as opposed to how much they've paid out to me. I know alot of people say that insurance is a crock and a scam. But when you need it, it's great to have it. The insurance company of the guy that t-boned me tried to come after me for money for medical costs (which turned out to be bogus ones anyways) and other things. They were contacting me directly so I forwarded the phone numbers to the claims agent. They fought the battle for me and really, all I ever heard out of the whole thing was what they were trying to get out of us and what the outcome was. State Farm told them to p*** up a rope. Since it was a 50/50 fault, my insurance paid me and his insurance paid him. State Farm went to bat and didn't back down from the fight. I switched my mother over to them about 8 years ago and she had a somewhat major claim within 6 months (weather related which usually won't affect your rates, AFAIK). They came out and assessed the damages and cut her a check on the spot that more than covered the damages (not alot more, but enough that if there was hidden problems they didn't see, it would take care of it). Like I said, if you don't give them headaches, they shouldn't give you headaches. Some companies can try to take advantage of misinformed people though. I have seen that happen with some other companies (like MSI). That's why I have stuck with State Farm. They aren't the best for everyone, but they've done good by me so far.
