so, some of you may have seen the '86 GL Wagon I had listed in the FS section. well, a guy on Ultimate Subaru has claimed it, and hopefully over the next month, I'll be working out the gremlins, and turning it from a POS into a sweet car.

I'm calling it NCC-1, short for NumbChux Conversions-1, being the first car where I'm doing all the work on the swap.

well, went to pick it up, and on the 'test drive', the HH cable (which I didn't know wasn't hooked up) meandered it's way over to the + battery terminal.....and did this:

yikes, minor setback. well, I've got another battery.....as I'm driving up here into Duluth, I'm coasting down the big hill into town, and look down and see this:

stupid vacuum leaks....darn engine won't stay running. that's ok....it's all coming out anyway.

I had it idling (@ about 400 rpms) in my driveway today....and thought, boy, that things spinning so slow, I could stop that clutch fan. so I used a stick to stop it, and took this:

got a few dents, but nothing serious:

not really scratched at all, so I think those should pop right out. if not....I've got more body panels from my '85.

mmmm.....peeling clear coat. I think it was overheated bigtime (which would explain why it had a burned valve when my buddy bought it a couple years ago), and the overflow tank boiled over....

but nothing a little sandpaper and an afternoon with an HVLP gun can't fix.

    plans/checklist

    '96 EJ22e from Justin's car
    timing belt/water pump/main seals
    radiator
    clutch
    bumpers
    corner markers
passenger side door mirror (you may notice in the pics....it's held on with silicone)
    x rear discs
    front brake pads
    wheel bearing seals
fix the surface rust on the hatch
    fixed body panels

    (one x = I have the parts. 2 = installed.)

    and......GO

When you get to NCC-1701 I bet you that Zahn/Malik will by it.

The loyale looks HAWT in that picture.

Whats the time frame on this project? how long do you think it will take for each stage of the swap?

    lol @ NCC-1701

time frame. well, I won't be making any money until he pays me the other half when he comes and gets it. and is very busy over the holidays....so it's December 1st or mid-January......so I'll be pushing hard for the December date.

local guys. Jeremy has offered the Heated Garage for the engine swap itself. I plan to have everything sourced and ready to go before the fact. and will be shooting for having the car coming and going under it's own power in the same day. there will be free pizza and beer for anyone who helps (helps....not stands around and makes dumb suggestions.....)

update. mostly just parts acquisition now. will be buying everything, planning on picking up the motor weekend after t-day (unless I have an excuse to go down there again before then). have the tbelt kit on hand already, do that, then swap the engine the next weekend. planning on having everything else done before that......that's the plan......

anyway, ordered some stuff last friday.....this came today:

    inside:
mmmm....metal end tanks, single core (rad to engine clearance is a premium...), and the straight-out oulet that I need (older ones point at a steep upward angle, that makes the EJ swap very difficult):

woa, I didn't even realize I had that. Cool!

I think she's in like half of the pics I take in the house.....at least she's not chewing on anything (she loves the plastic clips on wiring harnesses :eek3: ).

    wiring!

still more work to do, but I moved the 2 plugs on the engine harness closer to the ECU plug, and then stripped the bulkhead harness down to just the necessities. I'll be shortening all those wires to the relays and such, and installing in the car before the swap. so when the time comes (I only have the garage for the weekend...and I'd like to do it all in a day), I can string it all through the firewall, plug it in, and be ready to rock.

also, going to wire in a pair of simple relays for radiator fans, to be controlled by the ECU as stock.
