I'm putting on a new timing belt and I want to know if im doing it right. I made sure all the lines matched up on the belt with the pulleys starting with the crank pulley. Then turned the crank 2 full cycles. Now does it matter if the lines on the belt match back up with the lines on the pulley.(because mine doesn't) Thanks
You should be fine. It doesnt matter if the lines match up after 2 cycles. It would take some math skills to figure out how many cycles it would take for them to line up, given that the diameter of the crank is smaller than the cam pullies.
It will likely never match up with the lines on the belt again! Not when you'll see it anyway. Just make sure the pulley notches are in the correct spots, and you should be fine.
+1. if you're confident you put it on correctly, and you can turn it over freely, time to put it together and turn the key.
Ugh. Mano and I are going to attack this task as well tomorrow on my wrx. Along with some other tear out/ intalls. Hopefully some of our friends show up to help/ hang out!
only big thing to remember, is turn it over by hand a couple times. if you can turn it over by hand, that will insure that there won't be any piston vs valve action (which = major damage!). once you've done that, worst case scenario is it won't run right and you'll have to try again.
