hey guys, just bought a new Escort 8500 x50 for a trip to Chicago last weekend. Saw a few cops parked in the median on 90/94, but no bands went off, EVER! Back in town, I was cruising down 35W around the Roseville area and passed a cop today... no alert!

So I wonder, do a lot of the parked cops use timing, like VASCAR, instead? Or is my detector busted??

On the other hand, it does pick up automatic doors at drugstores and such...

cops sitting on freeways or just sitting watching for speeders don't sit with their regular radar on (which is what a your detector detects), they are sitting their lasering people, once your detector detects the laser, you're already dead.

    Oh, and it's called Lidar.

yeah, i figured because you can see them from a mile away, radar wouldn't do jack. But my laser doesn't even go on.

I didn't have POP on during my road trip, but I don't think that would've gone off either.

hmm... i'll give it a few more days... not that I speed anyway, but it keeps the honest people honest. :D

They don't sit there and POP or laser every car, either. They pretty much wait for the ones that are obviously going too fast. So yeah, 90% of the time you are not going to get any signal off them. But one day it will save your ass and you will be thankful.

Personally i think that those radar or laser things don't work. I always get busted with one so i don't bother with it. But i seen one called the valentine 1. That one's pretty cool it tells you which direction it detects the signal it coming from front, back, left or right. don't know if that helps... but it is a cool factor....

They don't work!! All that the radar detectors do is tell you if 1) you are being hit with a cops lazer gun. and in that case you are screwed because those will get a reading pronto. + they can only lazer you from the front it doesn't work from the back. 2) If he is using his radar he is behind you and you are probably screwed or he is just shooting random people in a crowd of cars. If you want something that DOES!!! work you need the K-40 radar/lazer DEFUSER!! Thats what I have and it is absolutly phenominal. They guarentee if you get a speeding ticket they will pay it in the first year you have it!!! BEAT THAT plus it is also intergrated into the car so you don't have a big stupid thing hanging from your window. all you see is 2 lights. one tells you if it is in the front the other tells you its from behind!!!! Best thing I've ever bought for my car!! IF you want more info on these let me know!

Except that if you get caught with one (and it's very easy to tell readings that are bouncing back from a diffuser) you get in more $hit than if you were just speeding. They're quite illegal in this state.

Yes, lidar detectors are more of a "your busted" thing, but radar does work. It's saved my butt a number of times thus far. And as for Vascar, well you can't do squat about that, cuz it's all based on timing.

^^^Oh, and please use the carriage return key, it makes reading much easier.

V1 is very good at picking up things before others will. And the arrows are not just a cool factor. They can help you decide if the radar is a threat or not. If it is to the side and you are passing a building generally you can ignore it. The arrows also will tell you multiple directions like if a door radar is on the side and a cop is in front or in back it will show both and it blinks the arrow it thinks is the greater threat. It also is pretty good at telling you how many radar sources are in the area by a number on the display.

This detector has saved me many a times. Had a blacked out Dodge Charger roll up on me from behind on I-94 and it was great to know to look behind me. Normally I would be looking forward for what I was rolling up on.

    Just my opinion.

might have been the same blacked out charger that got me. Now whenever I see a charger I just want to kick its door in.

i have an escort 8500 as well and it's working very well for me. It has a distnace bar that tells you how far it is. the V1 is good but you really don't need to know where the radar is comming from. As soon as the radar starts beeping, slow down to speed limit. Other than the V1 being able to tell you where the radar is comming from, the escort 8500 works just as well and it's 100 less. I think you might need to tune yours a bit, maybe yours is set to have everything off. you can tune it to respond to individual bands like teh x and K bands...i just turned everything on and it picks up radar like a charm. Ka and laser are what cops use. i pick up cops on the highway from wayy far away.....laser is about the only thing that it can't pick up from a distant, so as to every other rader detector, they have nothing on lasers.

    +1 for the 8500 x50

I've seen a few state troopers and local cops using K band still.

I have BAD luck with radar detectors, sure they have helped and got me out of some tickets but I've gotten more tickets with a fuzzbuster than without. You tend to rely on them too much!

I don't have one, I just go with traffic.....

light traffic, I go 3mph over only.....my speedo reads 2mph faster than what's it's going.

If there are a faster moving group, I'd follow them, but that's about it.....

well, to sum up, sounds like i spent $300 on something thats little more than a toy. The passport is cool if you set it to Expert mode: it shows independent bands for the multiple threats and their relative strength...kinda like the V1 bogey counter but without arrows.

Still, haven't hit upon a patrol car that's pinged me with radar and I've passed quite a few! :(

i don't really speed anyway and I've never had a citation, moving or otherwise. Recently, I got pulled over for 45 in 35... I was lost and didn't really know what the local limit was. But I got let off... this is like the 4th time in my life! So I can't rely on luck anymore... :)

cops dont always have there guns on, also turn your x band off and set it to expert mode and youll be a lot happier with the detector. I wouldnt say this a a toy. If your detectory is working properly and if you do speed on the occasion this will save you, not all cops use laser, i have come upon quite a few that use k, and ka bands, and i would say on a monthly basis i find myself slowing down to the sound of it, and of course right ahead is a po po.

It's a tool, you can't rely on a detector 100%. It takes a lot of common sense, paying attention to your surroundings, and a bit that whole "you've gotta pay to play" mentality.

^I can do that on my own. Why spend the money on a detector!?

I meant those things in addition to having the detector as a tool. You don't need to spend money on one. If you don't see the point, then don't get one.

But for me, it's saved my butt a few times, and to me that makes it worth it.

agreed, it has saved my butt a few times as well...there are times where i've doze off and stop paying attention to my speed and i start speeding abit....at the sound of the beep....it makes me look at my speed and go down to speed limit. Not to mention, cops do hide in bridges in the dark so you wont' see them......on 94 in minneapolis, the cops drive their cars up the grassy hills to the top along side the highway and radars you....you really wont' catch them at night at all...i only saw because i saw the cop driving up the hill and positioning himself.

Sounds like most of you guys need to some research and learn quite a bit about police patrol habits and different types of speed tracking.

YEah i spent $1,800 on the K-40 and they will pay my tickets within a year if i get one!! It tells me X,K,KA bands and it just plain freaks out when i'm getting hit with the lazer. But the best was when i was comming down 169 and it was night and all of a sudden BAM it started going BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP just freakin out. I wasn't racing or anything just about 5 over. so i clutched and e-braked no tail lights!!) and the beeping stopped! i was like ok HAHA you didn't get a reading. then all of a sudden BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP!! he was trying to shoot me again. i just laughed and drove passed him and waved. but i think that at night they hate on the HID's. but i love the k-40 and will never have anything else in my car

how bout the cop on foot. I got nabbed by a cop on foot on university a year ago. I was going 13 over and all of a sudden my laser blew up and i was baffled, saw no cars for miles. then a cop walked right in the middle of the street, blocked my path, and pointed me to go to the curb for my spanking. I was that close to turning the other away and pretending i didn't see him, but i bet that running is quite a bit more expensive than the ticket.

While I have great respect for the k40 systems, $1800 covers a bunch of speeding tickets, and their technology has been falling behind over the past few years. They talked about bringing out a more updated system not to long ago, and when they do I'm sure it'll be top notch, but until then they've fallen behind the pack.

Last I looked into them they still weren't able to detect POP radar functions.

Here's the thing, if a cop pulls you over and sees your big radar detector, you are almost guaranteed a ticket. I got pulled over doing like 15 over the limit in a resedential. I was polite, honest and wearing my seatbelt and he let me go. (Woodbury cops hate paperwork) But from what ive heard, your better off looking for antenna farms on under cover cars then bothering with radar detectors. But if you do use one, you find a guy who is really speeding, then just follow him form like 1/4 mile back. When the cops tag him it will set your detector off. I dunno just a strategy, i propose not getting caught. Im sure lots of people here have gone over 100mph before, but i certainly have never been caught. Tee hee

I just follow the person going the fastest because I figure that a cop will go for the person going the fastest. But it is getting harder to speed on the highways because of cops going in unmarked cars and hidding in the bushes on the side of the highway. I am thinking of getting a radar detector.
