hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to post this but, got to work this morning and notice my car was smoking. when i opened the hood i notice anit-freeze was slowly squirting out from the radiator next to the top hose (99 legacy outback) it looks to be missing a cap or something, the black part is gone and its showing the inner white part. anyone know if this part can be bought at the store or what its called? please let me know asap
Yes you can get it at a parts store it is called a radiator unfortunately there is no way to fix it other than leak stop and I would not suggest it unless you want to replace your entire cooling system.
Fatboy Walrus, yes i believe thats what it is, its slowly coming out of that screw like hole, almost like its missing the top cover to hold the liquid in
Can you remove it and replace the plug? Maybe check with dealer or online for it. No idea what the name of part is but I would assume it could be replaced with out swapping out the radiator. Not 100% sure. When I've changed coolant on most subarus I just remove the lower radiator hose rather than opening the plastic drain tab... Not sure what the engineer who designed these plastic plugs was smoking. You can always check opposed forces for part # reference. Or just say to hell with it, get a new radiator and put it in. Be sure to use subaru brand coolant and thermostat
I would start by looking for a plug. If you have access to another vehicle. Maybe find two options, part store that has it locally or bring it to a hardware store. Plugs are plugs. Just check threads to be sure not to strip it. That's my suggestion. Those plastic tab thingys on the radiators are stupid.
well i just went out there and tighten the screw a litte bit, hopefully that did the trick, ill found out once i drive home, on another note, i cant just use any radiator fluid? i recently had to fil the anti-freeze and just went to napa and got some....
Subaru recommends using the long lif coolant. Personally I do not know much of the difference between one brand and another. I think the last time I changed mine I used peak? Woops! I would stick to spec for cooling system stuff. And definitely a subaru thermostat. Thanks for the update hope your drive is drip free!
went to morries subaru today, bought a new plug and gasket, no longer leaks... guess the correct name for this item is "radiator air plug" thanks again guys
