can somebody find me a legit source stating that Group A wrc rally cars must have no larger then a 2 liter engine. ive found a few online but the websites are junk and i need this for a paper.

Also if any of the people who participate in rally events could post that this is indeed a fact i could use yourself as a reference. thanks..

It is 2L, but they allow overbores, which allow somewhat larger actual displacement, etc, etc.

Good luck making sense of FIA regulations.

how are they hard to make sence from? i'd venture a guess it's more to homologations than to the "group A" rules, seeing as how there are 2.5 groun N subaru's homologated...

Homologation just means that the manufacture made a certain amount of that car available to the public market. There were differing levels allowed for homologation. IIRC Group B was about 200 cars had to be released to public sale, most of which were bought by industry people in order to fill their homologation reqs for a certain class.

I don't think Gp A stated a 2.0L limitation, that part may have been specific to WRC classes. There are Gp A touring cars that have larger displacements than 2.0L.

Are there? I'm not at all certain that there are. I've certainly never heard of a Group N 2.5L WRX.

I stand corrected (regarding Group A cars):

So a 2.5L is allowable in Group A. Thing is, the 34mm restrictor makes things tougher and tougher as you try to get bigger. I think it was Citroen that was using a 1.6L in their car 4 or so years ago, because at the time they were able to make more power out of it than out of a 2.0L

I know that here in the US, the engine can pretty much be any size, but because of the 34mm restrictor, there's a real diminishing return as you go over 2.0L, I think ~2.3 is what the top cars are running, and I'd wager it's similar for the WRC cars.

Rules are similar for Group N, but the restrictor is 32mm, so a larger engine chokes even faster. I don't see Subaru going through the homologation process for the USDM 2.5L models, especially when Group N is going away in the US (at least for Rally-America) after this year.

nope, things are homologated when they are passed by the FIA, some parts are required to be on the production car, but some parts (brake calipers and rotors, handbrakes, strut tops, ect...) don't have to be on the production car, just OK'd by the FIA.
