have a question for you rallyx guys not sure what forum it goes in, but does anyone know about mazda mx-6's and if they would be a good fwd rallyx car option specificity this one http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/cto/2218077442.html talked to the guy and all it needs are tabs and a wheel bearing. I am looking for a dedicated rallyx car all I care is that its a manual and cheap.
he just sent me a email saying i dont need this car cause it doesnt hve a turbo he said its not what im looking for as if he knows sounds like a wacko LOLZ!
Actually I've seen MX6s on the regular rally circuit back when I was still active so it should work for rally-x just fine. If it's going to be a dedicated car you can take out all the interior bits you don't need to lighten it up and make it a bit more competitive against some newer FWD cars who probably use their car as a daily driver. Get some gravel tires on some cheap wheels and some KYB AGXs on it and you're ready to go. You might even want to consider a cage if you want to spend the $$$ because with enough work you could graduate this to G2.
Id look for a Mazda Protege, Nissan Sentra (Duh), late 90's Ford Escort (Protege under the skin), Ford Focus, VW Golf or Jetta as a FWD rally-x beater.
Most agree it's better to learn the basics of rally in FWD before moving to AWD. I'm wondering if Zippy the Wonder Bunny is still passing hands or if someone wadded it up. It was a VW Rabbit that several MN rally folks had used for G2. That was G2-ready so you'd kill in rally-x with it. I have been thinking about a RWD rally-x project car like an old Corolla, 240SX, or FC RX-7. It always seems like the RWD cars are having the most fun in the dirt. However I may be interpreting "barely holding on to the road" as "fun".
yea thats true but I have been rallyxing my awd wagon for about 4 years now so sticking with awd would be fine. I just dont wanna beat on it anymore.
Nearly any car can be competitive. Just ask Jim about the "Super Justy". With that said, I have to agree with Mark H about the Sentras. If you can find an older SER like his old one, it is a very well balanced car. Very easy to negotiate around the cones. I had a blast borrowing it for one season from Mark H and wouldn't hesitate picking one up if I was looking for a dedicated FWD rallyx car. You would want the SER for the extra power on the low end. Makes it nice to be able to stick it in 2nd gear and not have to shift down into 1st except for pin turns. RWD cars are a blast!! Totally different from anything else out there as far as feel. I had a blast with my MR2 out there. I just starting getting it figured out at the end of last season. It's a shame i won't be running this year. I think I could've been quite competitive with my 26 year old, 200,000 mile car. I also agree with Mark about the early 90's Escorts (nearly bullet proof engines), VW golfs and Jettas and the Ford Focus. The focus might be a bit out of the price range, but the others can be had quite reasonbly. When I went looking for the MR2 a few years back, I was actually looking for an early 90's Ford Escort GT's to use as a rallyx car that I could turn into a rally car. Round Dan proved that Accent is a very capable car as well!! As far as tires, you know that with the venues we have, the best all around tire is the Winterforce tires that Mark U raves about. Winter tires in general are about the best middle of the road tire that you can use at our events. They aren't the best at some, but are far better than all-seasons almost all of the time. They are a good compromise for all surfaces.
talks are in the works! wont need any tires got that covered!! woot thanks for the advice guys. see you all march 5th! and why are you not racing this year?
We had our baby in December and I am taking a little step back from all my extra-cirricular activities for a year or two. Want to save up some money and spend more time with the family. I might come out for a few of them, but I'm not sure yet.
I don't think I'd want to start with a mid-engine on gravel unless it was something crazy like a 037 or Stratos kit car. I was pretty competitive with the turbo RS out at the Arkansaw rally-x and the ones we used to run down in the gravel pit north of Rochester but I want to kick the back end out a little more and try something different. I'd love to get a Datsun 510 and drop a Cosworth drivetrain in it. Or maybe just go obscure muscle and get an AMC AMX. Rallye de Paris is coming up soon...
After I put Tokico HP's on all 4 corners and removed both swaybars, it was very neutral in the dirt. I had a hell of a time to keep it from understeering and then snap-oversteering. Once the swaybars came off, that equalled everything out for me. I wouldn't start with a MRWD either. I've done awd-turbo dsm's and also na-fwd cars. By far though, I've had more fun in the MR2 than any of them. It has sufficient low-end torque to allow me to leave it in 2nd gear most of the time. A 510 would be fun! I still want a RS200 daily driver just to watch everyones head to turn and ask, "What kind of car is that?"
Now these rallyx events is this all cone driving or road racing or jumps? I raced beater-x last year and that was a blast in my 91 escort and want to race a more full out rally set up this year in my 2003 SE-R. Where would I look for details to get into this?
These are SCCA RallyCross events. Single-car cone-dodging in dirt. Still fun and your Escort could be a very competitive car in the M2 class (assuming that the stuff done to it for the beater-x doesn't violate the safety rules. Like I think you have to have a windshield, and some beater series don't require that). Talking about real stage rally, for the B15 SE-R, there are options. The B13 has more real rally parts, but B15s have been done and been competitive. I'd be happy to take the discussion offline (I really very rarely check this board anymore) at [email protected] I'm in the process of finishing up a B13 SE-R stage rally build.
great sounds like your the right guy to talk to about this! I sent you an email and look forward to further discussions.
One of us, one of us... If you liked beater-cross, you should like rally-x too. It's a little easier on the cars, but still lots of fun.
Where do you do rally x at? Now mine is set up for jumping such as radiator in the back front skid plates and renforced front bumper is that legal there?
