Had my 60k mile maintenance done last week at the Subaru dealership here in Grand Forks...Ended up finding metal chunks in the rear diff fluid. Talked about options with the guys in the service department, they told me it'd be around $1,900 for them to fix it. I'm hoping I can get it done a bit cheaper...:hsugh:

Anyone got a used rear diff laying around that I can buy? Or know of a good place to find a used one? I can afford to buy a new one...but I had other plans for that money. Oh well. I'd buy the diff and do the work myself but with my current situation I don't have the time or the space to do it.

    Thanks in advance!

Chunks or lots of fine metal shavings stuck to the magnet? If there are no large pieces of metal, a magnet full of metal shavings is pretty normal.

    PM Replied :)

There were actual chunks in the fluid, not just shavings...techs said it looked like gear teeth. I'd love to know how it happened, I've babied this car since I got it...Ah well.

I had a rear differential go on my 03.... you can get a used rear end through a car yard for around $450.. couple of hours of your time and some fluid you would be done...

is your differential howling or whining?? if not leave it

It hasn't been making much, if any noise lately, but I just recently moved into town so I'm rarely driving at highway speeds anymore. When I was taking the highway every day, it would make a rather pronounced howling sound when decelerating from 63 mph or so.

Got the car back from the dealership today, thanks to Grayguy for the used differential! Haven't had a chance to take it on the highway yet, but it already feels a lot better than it did with the other diff. Will update later once I take it on the interstate.
