Now I know there's plenty of threads on painting wheels, but this one's a bit different. I picked up a set of 2.5RS 6-spokes. They have a bit more curbage on them than I'd like to have, so I'm thinking about refinishing them myself. The damage is quite minimal, and when running your finger over it, it doesn't feel as if the wheel is gouged, or that there is any high/low spots. Just black scuffs around the lip. My question is, is only sanding, previous to prime/painting, going to cover those up adequately? I don't want to have to use any filler, as I've never done that before, and they don't seem to be too badly damaged. Are they going to come out looking scuffed after paint?
While I'd love to, it seems a bit too expensive of an option for just winter wheels. I just want them to look nice enough to not detract from my car, because they just don't look all that great as is.
I am in this predicament also. I am painting/powdercoating the rotas (they are my winter wheels). If you buy a set of new black wheels, they are usually just painted anyways, so I lean towards the paint. It won't hide scratches of any significant depth, but it will make them less obvious.
i had purchased a set of 18" rota subzeros cheap off a guy that had bad curb damage, i took my makita with a cartridge roll sander on it and just sanded them out and re-rounded the lip as close to what it was before, i started with a 80 grit and finished with a 120 and after i was done with them you could only tell where the spot was if i pointed them out and you looked close.
there was a sweet tutorial online from a porsche guy that re-finished his wheels. he put body filler in the curbage it looked 100% when he was done.
There is also a guy that did the same thing to some STI wheels. They had big chucks taken out of them.
