Are there any restraunts around Minneapolis area with really good beer? I'm not talking just Blue Moon good, but really good beer. Something like Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout, Bells Oberon, Aventinus Doppelbock, Rochefort Trappistes 10, Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock... or something along those lines.

Anyone know of a great place for beer?

+1, get the boot. 70 oz. of beer goodness.

Also Granite City is A+ for great food and have 4 of their own beers that are brewed on location.

The Local Pub downtown in the nicollet mall. It's an Irish Pub last time I was there all taps were $5. Great place to sit out on the patio on the mall

+1 for the local they have awesome food and beer. Also Rock Bottom downtown brews their own beer just like Granite City...Rock Bottom has a dark one that I order everytime I'm there which kicks @ss but I can't recall the name.

The Muddy Pig on the corner of Dale and Selby in St. Paul, will fill your extremely good beer fix.

    Food is really good too.

Is the Herkimer still open in Uptown? They brew their own and it's always been pretty good. Seconded for Gasthaus and The Local. If you like the DT pub scene then there's also Brit's, Kieran's, and Keegan's, but they all carry pretty similar imports. My personal favorite pub is out in Maple Grove called the Claddagh, they're one of the few that have Strongbow and they have fantastic food. Also for lighter fare but an interesting beer selection hit up the Acadia on Nicollet.

That's one drawback of the Cities that bothers me is the lack of brew pubs or pubs with massive beer selections. Down here in Dallas it's the same. When I went to DC a month ago I went to a pub that had 900+ beers on the beer list, and I am not kidding. There was also a place in St. Louis that had 300+. But my favorite is the UP of Michigan in the Keweenaw peninsula. I spent last week there drinking $2 pints at the Keweenaw Brewing Co in Houghton all evening (they brew 7 different beers on site), then also hit a pub in Calumet which had some microbrews I'd never even heard of, and I consider myself somewhat of a beer snob.

Any place in the Twin Cities that has Caffrey's on tap? An Irish joint in San Diego called Hooley's had it for a while then dropped it because only a few of us drank it. Only way I can describe it is that it was like Guiness Lite. It was light in color, but very smooth and creamy and it would do the little foam show like a draught Guiness.

I went to school in Da UP, the bars and beer selections you could find up there are awesome. I wish I could live up there.

Thanks for the selections everyone. I live in Hastings, have been to the local, Kegans, Keirans, and a few other places, but want to widen my selections. :) I am also a beer snob.

Yes, the Herkimer in Uptown is still open, 26th and Lyndale, still has great beer. My old apartment was two blocks from there--good thing it was walking distance

The Local is good-but I don't go there for the beer, I go for the whiskey.

I am not a fan of The Rock Bottom and the beer kind of sucks.

McKenzies on Hennepin and 9th has a pretty good selection. They have Hoegartten--one of the few places around here that seems to carry it.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Old Chicago--they have a huge selection.--d/t and uptown (Hennepin and 29th--next to the bus station)

The Loon on 1st and Sixth has a good selection--I believe they even have Pilsner Urquell (sp) on tap.

That should get you a good start.

    Sorry.

I work at Old Chicago up here in D Town, and I must say, having 28 beers on tap is rather nice.

Ok you 'beer snobs', while on your adventures searching for a good brew, have you ever seen a place that has Orion for sale? A Japanese export that's near impossible to come by. I'm not trying to throw out a challenge, I'm thirsty damnit and that's what my taste buds are looking for. A beer you can drink to no end and not end up with a hangover!

Chiang Mai Thai in Uptown has a small, but good selection.... They are the only place I have seen that sells Bells on tap (not that I have tried THAT hard, though).

Triple rock has bells on tap, as do a few other inie type places.

The chatterbox has a lot of good beers on tap, custom made beers from schell's and ataris and nintendos in the back room.

I like to go get a pilsner urquell and play rad racer.
