I have 1 or 2 dime-sized rust spots on my roof. Can I get rid of these before they spread? If so, what should I do / use? Recommendations please...
uh oh! Your car has cancer! Dont know what to tell you man, other than, be greatful its only on the roof.
i guess you could try sanding the rust out and getting some touch-up paint from the dealer. that is, if you don't care what it looks like.
If you love your car...take it to a body shop. It's going to do nothing but get worse, so might as well nip it in the bud.
This. Even if it's just surface rust or oxidation of the paint you want to take care of it. Otherwise it will spread like cancer and your car will end up looking like poop.
While I've had soso experience with Abra (roseville) in the past My friend claims there is a good guy at the one in maplewood. If you're interested I can try and get his name.
Reviving the thread... Can anyone on here recommend someone with touch-up experience? I'd love to get this taken care of before winter comes. They're tiny little spots, and have pretty much stayed that way since I discovered them two months ago (washing every two weeks, etc.). I took my car to Abra in Chanhassen and they told me to get some touch-up paint and do it myself. I have touch-up paint and access to sandpaper... is that all I need besides clear?
I work at New Central Auto Body in South Minneapolis and it sounds like to me is that it had previous body work done to it before and for some reason moisture has got under the paint/ body filler causing it to rust. Sanding it and brush touching it will not do anything but "cover" it up for the mean time but it will NOT stop the rust! I recommend that you go and get your whole roof re-painted and have the rust spots taken care of properly. At my work we do alot of rust repairs so I would recommend us! Awesome. I'll keep you in mind for the future. However... there has never been any bodywork done on this car. The 2 rust spots are on the roof, but are tiny spots originating from rock chips that penetrated the primer. Moisture got in before the paint was repaired, and voila. :hsugh:
I'd recommend Autoworks out in Rockford. They'll basically do ay bodywork and they'll do it damn well. Not the cheapest out there, but fair and at least among the best in the cities. They'd be quite upfront with you about what they can do and what your options are. But it you're looking for the cheap way out, they're probably not the first chice.
Noted. Yeah, they're tiny spots right now, so as long as I don't go crazy with sanding a huge area I should end up with OK results, right? They're on the roof so no one's really going to notice minor imperfections. Come to think of it, no one's even commented on the rust spots (and I assume the touch-up paint would look better). :biggrin: It would be nice if it looked fantastic, but I honestly won't have that kind of money available until next spring at the earliest. I will probably need to get the whole roof re-painted in a couple years, though. Probably the hood, too. But I'll probably get about $250 in minor PDR done before I get to that point... Is there anything specific I should avoid when doing this touch-up job myself?
Highly recommend Red Rooster in Bloomington - Lyndale/88th St which I know has a decent selection of paint supplies. Every time I need rotors and brake pads then they have them in stock incl. cheap-to-ceramic pads. The place is always busy on the weekends so you know their reputation is great. Good Luck!
