SCCA To Discontinue ProRally, ClubRally Programs in 2005

    http://www.scca.com/News/News.asp?Ref=178

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 5, 2004) – Sports Car Club of America’s Board of Directors voted Monday to discontinue the sanction of its current stage-based rally format, including the ProRally and ClubRally Championships, beginning January 1, 2005 due to increasing risk exposure.

“This was a difficult and unfortunate decision to make,” SCCA Board of Directors Chairman Gary Pitts said. “However, from an insurance standpoint, the stage rally format has gotten to the point where it puts the entire Club, its activities and entities under an undue risk.”

“We have many SCCA members whose interests lie in rally,” SCCA President and CEO Steve Johnson said. “It is my intent to allow these members the opportunity to rally in the future and continue to access the sport. I am confident we can accomplish this task.

“We are in negotiations to transition SCCA’s elements of the stage-based rally activity to Rally America, a longtime partner and participant in the sport of rally.”

Unaffected by the decision are SCCA’s RallyCross and RoadRally programs.

SCCA began its special stage-format ProRally Championship in 1973. Since then, the ProRally Championship Presented by Hot Wheels has been regarded as the top domestic rally series. The 2004 Championship has one round remaining, Lake Superior ProRally (LSPR), which will run as scheduled Oct. 22 in Houghton, Mich.

Yeah, what's up with the FIA? If I got it right, they are providing gearbox's and forcing all cars to have non-turbo 2.0 inline 4's. WTF, I guess Subaru won't be running anymore.

Yeah I saw that link somewhere yesterday too. I believe this Max Moseley twatcycle wants to mandate transversely mounted engines.

Who would want to watch 2.0L NA cars race anyhow? Yawn.

30 years of history just flushed down the toilet. I knew this was coming because of the f'ing whiny-arse locals and law enforcement agencies (not the officers themselves who love working their shift watching a rally, but their political superiors). Spectatorship was just making another comeback after it was restricted so much after that one fateful season. I hope Rally America does a better job handling problems than the SCCA did. At least they'll be able to concentrate on rally and not be such pussies when it comes to confronting people. :(!

As for the FIA I don't think that'll ever fly. First they did away with Group B but left Group A open which was still fast. They lost a lot of respect because of it and gained it back in the mid-90s with some standout new drivers. However I believe this move will cause its ultimate demise which is financial disaster for a lot of the companies who put on the rallies. A motorsport that is a close second to F1 everywhere else but here and they want to mess with it? I think ultimately it will be those putting forth the money that will make the decision, not the FIA.

Rally will continue in the USA, without any gaps most likely. Rally America is taking over the program and knowing the people in that organization (based in Minneapolis) it will be bigger and better than ever.
