an 05 sti bone stock against a 97RX-7 twin turbo also bone stock. Who would win assuming drivers are of equal skillz. I am arguing with a bone headed co-worker and we are bored

Assuming they were in both stock form and good working order the RX-7 would take the win in a straight line drag race. Although the STi has AWD and loads of torque it also has to overcome the 3400lb weight disadvantage, great launch from the start, but the RX-7 will take the lead quickly once in the mid and high speeds. This car from last time I test drove one weight in around 2800lbs, quick spool, longer gears and very quick acceleration, almost too much for a small car such as this.

But if you're talking a road course and especially low traction conditions the outcome would be the opposite.

I have never seen a bonestock tt rx7 break 13's. In fact most stock rx7's have a hard time keeping up with mid 14s hondas.

Most sources (Road & Track, etc) put the RX-7 at a 14.0 quarter mile. The same sources have the STi at a 13.0 sec 1/4.

no, seriously, I don't get why pople even care!?!?! AWD rally inspired econo box vs. a RWD sports car? totally different applications.

do your math buddy... rotary engine is technically a 2-stroke engine which would put its' displacement equal to a 2.6l....

if I had the choice of both cars... I would take the RX7 hands down... sexier car even if it is less than a sec slower over the 1/4... I would say top end it would beat the STi... and besides the slightest mods and it is a crazy car...

Only unique people appreciate the Rotary and what it has to offer... I had a turbo 1st Gen and the engine was 7 yrs old pushing well over 200WHP on 8psi daily driver... it beat 3rd Gens, V8s and other assorted vehicles...

granted they have a bad reputation for throwing apex seals.. but that's cause dingbats think a stock one can rev to well over 9K (mostly Peripheral ports can) when a stock one is really good for about 7500 - 8000 before you are just abusing the seals....

plus I have heard of plenty of local cars INCLUDING subarus whose engines have lasted less time ;)

comparing the displacement of a rotary to a piston engine is entirely irrelevant.

how much power would said RX7 have? I find it hard to believe that the difference would be so drastic that a 2WD car weighing 500+lbs less would get beat by a second!

when i was stage 2 wrx and auto i beat a tt'd rx7 5 speed with some mods from a dig in the 1/4 mile. Brake boosting 12-15lbs also helped.... ;)

the issue is the rotary engine doesnt have torque... unless you slip in a 20b then that's a different ball game... if my dreams come true i will do that within the next 5 yrs into a first gen... then we will see...

^ That's what I'm sayin. Power delivery, weight, ultimate power, and traction all some together is a specific way. Sometimes you need more than the other...and less of the other two, or three, . . . depending . . .

    How was a 1994ish RX-7 tired?
Tire technology has evolved quite a bit in a decade.
Also, AWD traction plays a huge factor.

    As is power loss.

I say, with two equal average drivers, the rx-7 would take the win in a 1/4 mile drag.

With two excellent drivers, the sti would probably win.

    Various race results:

    1/4 mile: STi
    Off-road: STi
    Snow: STi
    Hot chick in bed: RX7

For a daily driver, I'd take the STi hands-down. For a weekend toy, no doubt the RX7.

    Surely you jest.

An average driver wouldn't dump the RX-7 at redline to get a good launch, and its 255 hp and total lack of torque would leave it sucking wind. The power advantage of the STI would overcome the weight penalty, and the power curve of the 7 is such that a sub-optimal launch would make it quite slow.

    Case in point: automatic RX-7s.

Ummm.. I beg to differ... my RX7 I launched at the track with about 7K in revs... cant remember the reaction but it was a bees d1ck away from breaking out the car got so much traction (which surprised me) on street tires that my glovebox popped open, all teh stuff ended in teh back seat, I think I pulled so hard on the Steering Wheel that I think I stretched it about 2 inches..

I was about 3 1/2 lengths in front of the other car which ran a 13.1 when I hit fuel cut due to lean (I had dropped the exhaust at the mid-pipe) and it ran too lean... I still ran a 13.4 but I know at the distance I had on the other guy I would have had a 12.8 or so...

12A turbo on 8psi... daily driver.. ran a 13.6 in complete street trim... 5yr old (yes 5yrs old) motor, hadnt had a tune in about 4.5 years...

back to the topic though... they are 2 different beasts...

this comparison is can me arguable. some might say that the 1.3 liter rating on the rx7 is wrong. im not sure how they measure it because the rotor housing is always changing due to the rotor spining around on the center shaft.

in a drag from a dig im sure the sti would be the winner. but from a roll the FD would win because it has way less weight and less drivetrain to turn. the rx7 doesnt have as much wind resistance either.
