Well, really the question is, "Is there any reason this should NOT be connected?"

Sorry for the noob lack of part names but that's cuz I am. Just bought the car last night - 02 WRX Wagon - and while making myself a little acquainted dropped a coupla clips into the engine bay. I removed the stock air filter and it's top and discovered this disconnected hose (I did eventually find both the dropped clips). The car has been driving great, but there were a few times we smelled a very small amount of fuel - almost more like white gas or kerosene - after the turbo did it's turbo-y thing. But only once or twice and very faint. Picture is on it's way.

Picture is from passenger side of car, you can see the bottom, in-side of the air filter box and then the disconnected hose in question. Thanks!

its unmetered anyways since it plugs into the intake manifold, @ the pcv valve, its not like a giant hole directly after the maf...

Ummmm, no. I think that's the pass. side head breather line (which doesn't connect to the pcv check valve).

The problem is that there is no restriction now so the car can suck in way more outside air after the maf. It's basically the same thing as drilling a hole in your turbo inlet or leaving one of the inlet nipples unplugged.

The head breather lines go into a different nipple than the block pcv line.

word, i guess i was living in n/a land, where compression is high and silly lines go different places.

yeah that should be plugged in. It might just be the valve cover breather line. which can vent to atmosphere iirc, but you dont wanna have it open to the air (should have atleast a breather filter there) dont wanna get water/dirt in there.

Yeah, you can do that but just make sure that the nipple those lines go to on the turbo inlet hose are plugged to prevent a post-maf leak.

I wouldn't be worried about unmetered air (although an issue) as having an un-filtered hole into the crank case. see all the crap caked on that inlet? yea.....all that stuff is also in your oil now :eek3::eek4:

Isn't that where you would run a catch can from? To catch all that junk that surrounds the opening. Just from doing research on catch cans, my first thought was a breather line.

Thanks all. I knew it SHOULD be hooked up but was not sure if there was a reason to NOT connect it.

Car is driving great. I don't think there is any difference in its performance. Maybe, and only very slightly maybe, the turbo kicks in slightly earlier; but we'll do more driving before I say it is really so. I was worried it had been tuned in the disconnected state and it would now not, well, drive, I guess. But that would have been a quick fix.

We are right in on an oil change now - about 3k - so I will inspect it as much as I can when I change it. Last owner always used Amzoil. Should I stick with that, switch to Mobil1, something else entirely like pomegranate juice or red wine? Thanks again!
