Car: 2007 Subaru WRX TR 5MT (approximately 60K miles) Pertinent Modifications: - TurboXS Stealthback (catted) - Stromung Axleback - Snorkus Delete - Prodrive Blue Springs - Nuke Stage II Tune Description of the problem: I first noticed it when I hit peak boost in 5th gear this morning, the exhaust seemed to take a different tone as I was in higher revs. I started putzing around with my driving to see if I could re-enact it and when I was on my way home from work, I was in 4th and floored it...in the middle of the powerband, my revs shot up with no noticeable acceleration. Recent maintenence or modifications: Just put the stealthback (DP and midpipe) on in Sept. and got the tune from Nuke. My best guess is a slipping clutch, but it seems weird at only stage II power and 60K miles. What do you guys think? I don't seem to be getting any clutch smell after any of this though and I've never really beat on the car (no launches, no track days, etc...).
Yup your clutch is gone you have the classic symptoms. Drop me a PM if you need someone to do your install.
Alright, slipping clutch confirmed. Now I need to decide on which clutch is best for me and was hoping to get some input. After doing some research, here's what I'm thinking: Exedy OEM replacement (http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Exe...-Models-inc-2006-2011-WRX-2005-2009-Legacy-GT) - Only stage II and don't plan on increasing power in the foreseeable future. - I don't track/AutoX the car at all. - From what I understand, people are running much more torque to this OEM replacement than I would be and having no issues with it. - After doing some reading, it seems you want the clutch to be the weak link to help protect the transmission. Exedy Stage 1 (http://www.rallysportdirect.com/Exe...-Models-inc-2006-2011-WRX-2005-2009-Legacy-GT) - Essentially, the only comment I have here is that it seems stage 1 would also fit my power for street use while also leaving a little room for a power bump. Right now, I'm leaning towards the OEM replacement...but what do you all think?
I think I've pretty much made up my mind on the Exedy OEM replacement...just looking for some reinforcement from others who know more on the subject. Now, let's talk flywheels. I'm seeing a lot of info about Subaru recommending to just replace the flywheel and never resurface...is this actually true? Or is resurfacing just fine?
I went with the exedy oem replacement and i was stage 2 as well. I got my car and within a couple weeks my clutch started slipping so i never really got to feel the stock one. I also had my flywheel replaced with a ligher weight one. If i remember correctly it was a competition clutch lightweight flywheel. I really liked it. I wouldnt hesitate to pick up the exedy.
The cheapest I could fine was from Oakos for $279...just shy of $300 with shipping. I haven't looked at Amazon though, I'll check it out. How about the flywheel thing? Okay to resurface assuming it's still in good condition?
I'm not seeing anything cheaper on Amazon. I can't really compare prices to an '02-'05 WRX product since the clutches are different. I think I'll be ordering through Oakos this afternoon and waiting patiently for it to arrive
I had one Exedy OEM replacement clutch in my 02 WRX. It lasted less than one calender year. The ACT HDSS I have now has held up much better. I had a transmission go out last November and decided since the ACT Clutch had been in the car for 3 seasons I should swap it out as long as I had the trans out. I ordered a new one, and removed my trans, much to my surprise out came a ACT clutch with almost no discernible wear. It never slipped and the feel was much better than that of the Exedy. I would have had no problem putting the used one back in my car, or someone Else's for that matter. I obviously put in the brand new one. That's my clutch story. The long and short of it is that I would recommend the ACT product over the Exedy.
Eh, I just ordered the OEM Exedy. I didn't really see any bad reviews on it, so I pulled the trigger. Thanks for your input though.
In the future give Josh a call at Import Image Racing, he will beat any price out there. Edit: Not to mention he is a supporter of MNSubaru.com
Good to know...I did my comparison shopping and Import Image was a little more expensive, but I didn't directly communicate with anyone. Live and learn...
^No one can match your clutch burning skills my friend...no one! I've been on the Exedy replacement for a loooong time, you won't be dissapointed with it. Matt(Bikerboy) did my install also. Pretty sure that he had my flywheel resurfaced also. So if he thinks it will be fine, it WILL be fine(Matt is the man!).
I got the exedy stage one on my stage 2 wrx. works great but I had a ****ty thing happen this week. My shifter fork took a ****. It wore through where the slave touches it and where the pivot ball is. idk if it was because of the clutch or not. i feel as if that may be something that needs to be addressed.
