Who wants to help a brotha' fix his seeping Valve Cover Gaskets? I knoooow someone here wants to help me out. I can't afford the ridiculous price to have someone do it, and it can't be THAT hard. I just don't want to do it myself, cause I'm teh N3VVB. It's way past due, and I can't even go WOT without boggin' around 5k :-/ Damn plugs are shot because of it. I have all the stuff, just need help. Come on....who's comin' with me?
I do understand that the covers are on the side. I have read the how to, so i have an idea. The engine does not to be removed but lots of other things do need to be removed.
The sohc doesn't look too bad. I'm not sure how much different it will be on the wrx. I mean, besides being short of room to work with, how hard can it be? Has anyone else done it on a dohc? Are there any tricks? Do u really need to use hondabond on the new gaskets? Should I watch out for anything? I'm fairly competent when it comes to working on my own car, but that's usually because I can always find a write-up on the net.
Justin, you are talking about valve cover gasket, right? Not Head gasket? It should not matter if its sohc or dohc with valve cover. The only thing you are doing is removing the cover, putting a new gasket in and torquing it to the spec.
Again, you have never done this before and it is showing. The SOHC is much easier to do because the sparkplugs are on the top of the head covers so they aren't in your way. There is much more room to work. I'd have to look, but getting at the head cover bolts might be difficult on a WRX. And this isn't just one gasket, it is 3 per head cover. And you might have to replace the half moons (you should anyway.) I'd leave this to someone that has done it, because if you screw it up, it is going to hemmorage oil either onto the road or back into the plug holes.
I had talked to Matt about it and he said that I wouldn't need the half moons. But either way, I just need to get it done. It would be best if someone who has done it on a wrx before would be there. That's not to say that it can't be done by a couple of newbs, but I just want it done, and not have to worry about it anymore. :-/
i bet Matt(bikerboy) can do it for reasonable price. I really dont think it should be too hard to do. Its hard because its hard to get to them.
So, what's so tough about this replacement? Still don't really understand why people say it's difficult...
Ah ha...So, if I were to just take my time, it may be possible for a semi-newb like myself to get it done fairly competently? Does a guy need to clean any of the parts while the cover is off?
looking through the service manual, it says to apply to the "four front open edges of peripheral gasket." Then tighten to 3.6 ft-lbs. What would one suggest for RTV?
ok then...well, I'm gonna' give it a go. I guess we'll see what happens. If anyone want's to come over and help me out, or just watch me F it up...let me know.
actually...I decided against it, until I get some new plugs. Might as well throw them in at the same time. :-/
When I get some new plugs to put in it. Napa doesn't have any...So I posted a WTB thread. If I don't get any bites I'll probably just order them from eBay or something. So, whenever I get the new plugs. I figure it's a waste of time to not put new plugs in. I'm positive there's some oil leakage happening, and that's why I'm boggin' at about 5k when on the throttle.
alright...I have new plugs, all new gaskets, some fujibond, AC o-rings (Minnetonka Subie ftw), and a new brake caliper. All I need is the initiative to get this stuff over with. :-/ It's too friggin' hot to do this today...or this week for that matter.
Well...I got the passenger side done with only minor garmonbozia. I'll have to have a go at the other side tomorrow. It was kind of a beeotch. But, it should go faster on the other side now that I have a feel for what I'm doing.
...and scene. So happy to have that over with. It wasn't too bad, but some of those bolts are in some tight spots. I wish I would've had a 10mm ratcheting wrench. I only had a 12mm :-/ Good Times.
