winter is coming and I'm looking to but a winter tire setup with steelies. Has anyone been able to find any 17" steels at all? (I think 16' on 09 wrx would look goofy but may have to settle) I have checked many places and cant seem to find 17' steels. anyone have a secret spot they would like to share for cheap steelies?
big steelies are dumb. they will look steelies anyway regardless if they are 15s or 18s (slightly less dumb if you get creative), why spend the extra cash on low pro tires if you can physically fit a smaller steelie on the car?
you own an 09 wrx and cant afford anything better than steelies? no i have not seen 17" seelies ever. buy some earlier gen wrx wheels. i'm sure they will fit and theyre alot nicer than steel wheels.
I doubt its purely a cost issue. Also -- Nicer? How do you mean? I can't think of anything nicer than something that: 1. will BEND and not crack 2. is very cheap to replace when the inevitable happens That being said - I like my 16" steelies. More options for lower cost snows, and much more stock available in a hurry. Also - more sidewall is better in the winter.
^didnt know that. i was mainly talking about compact import steel wheels. as far as "nicer", i just figured because he bought a brand new car i dont see why he would want steelies. but now that you have made me aware that they will bend if they come in contact with a curb (self explainatory now that i think about it) and are alot more resielent to breaking than alloys, you changed my perspective.
and you can make em look kinda cool (for steelies) if you spend a little time on em.... sorry about the picture whoring....
shibbs is right on the money. cost is not the issue here, I have always, and will continue to always drive on steelies for winter, due to the fact that if they do bend, I can pound them back most of the time, or they are inexpensive to replace. also, steel rims rarely have any bead leaks. I know the 17" steels are out there, just cant seem to find them for my car. The reason I want 17" is for the fitment. They are not going to look "nice" but it will look better on the 09 because of the oem lip kit. 16" will just look too small.
good points here. tires seem to be readily available in the size i need, also discounted prices are available to me which is nice. sidewall is good, however, these are by no means low profile tires. 16" may be the way i end up having to go, but I want to make sure that I really cant find 17''s! thanks for the responses
you can find anything on the internet... http://diamondracingwheels.com/drwcustom.html = 17" steel wheels...for a custom price trust the forum, 16's for winter will be fine. sidewall is a good thing and it will not look as goofy as you believe.
If you're SERIOUSLY thinking that 16" steelies will look goofy, you're welcome to come over some day and throw one of mine on quick. hahaha Just bring your own tools and junk.
Diamond racing wheels are dirt cheap. I got my 15x10's from diamond for under $100 a wheel. The thing you have to worry about with the diamonds is that you have to run spacers to give a flat surface for the torque ring to ride on, otherwise you can break the wheel or your brake disc.
I looked for 17' Steelies and had no luck. Here are 16's for $55 http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35041 I agree with Shibbs, they won't look weird and save some money!
I think the Audi TT steelie is a 17, problem is all the euro kids buy them up like they are made of gold.
I have driven snow tires on alloy wheels for 10+ years without one single issue. If you guys are hitting curbs that often , slow down (biting my tongue on this one!). Buy someone's take-offs and have fun...
thank you sir:biggrin: have you, by chance, installed 16s yet? it's looking like I will indeed have to go with 16s, I was hoping I could find some that were made for my car, I dont want to mess around w/ hub centric rings. I guess 16s it is with some blizzak ws-60:yumyum:
