I just found out that my steering rack may be on its way to the graveyard. My car has had quite a few problems with it and most have been taken care of under warranty. It's at about 43k on it now and the Subaru tech and I both heard a noise coming from the steering rack. It sounds like a rod being pulled through a pipe with a burr on it. That's when you turn the wheels with it in the air. I already put in a call to Subaru of America to see if they can get the local district rep to help me get this replaced.

If I just replace it, I'd rather have a quicker ratio. Soooo....

Questions: Does anyone know if there is a difference between the STI rack and the WRX? And will it fit? Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution to replacing the rack other than a factory Subaru rack?

I think all the us stuff is the same. IIRC, you need to get the jdm spec c rack for the quicker ratio.

There are some aftermarket rack makers I would give a search of NASIOC

all the WRXs pre 05 got a slower rack.
The STi Does have a quicker ratio and it does bolt up. most sti owners don't notice it though, as they blame the quicker steering on the smaller steering wheel.

Yes, some aftermarket ones are available, but they're crazy fast. like 12.5:1.

Revlabs in Canada has a couple of racks that are for sale, they've got their street rack and a motorsports rack. I can't remember the exact ratios, but I know that the street rack is slightly quicker than an Evo. The motorsports rack is something like 10:1.

Is there any documentation on the differences or at least the specs of the two racks? Anyone know the part numbers? Anyone have an extra STI steering rack for sale?
