Well I'm thinking of taking a student loan and using that money on a USDM STi engine swap. Anyone know any good shops in the midwest that knows how to do the swap? I know there's alot of shops on the west coast but that's 2000 miles away and I don't want to drive that far for an engine swap.

I can do it but do you know what it will take? Lots of money!

i know it takes alot of money. this place called garage tuning does the swap for $8,000 total. $5,000 for the engine alone and $3,000 for parts and labor.

what i have seen for prices are 5k for engine and alost another 5k for driveline (if you wanna have 6 speed with dccd). then arm and leg for labor.

think you could do it yourself? thats what i would do. that way you can keep your arm and leg, and you get to learn alot about subie engineering.

they did a walk through of this swap in a import tuner. they ran into issues with the driveshaft not being the right size (STi is shorter because tranny is longer). but they have some neat facts in teh article (ie can use WRX wiring for something and will directly connect to AVCS).

    good luck

If you would have to borrow money to pull this off, that's probably a bad sign from the start. These types of projects are best suited to people for whom money is no object.

i have a scholarship that pays for college and i could take a school loan which has low interest. so i tought i'd be a good idea to get my dreams accomplished. having an interest on a loan of 2.77% is real good and you can't really beat that.

I'm going to have to go with Zola on this one. If you have to take out a loan to do mods, maybe you should wait.

Agreed, you arent even out of school yet, you dont wanna get into debt before you are even "out in the world" get a house, a good job, then think about swaps...i cant do my swap even though i have the block in my posession untill i can afford it, houses are expensive![xx(] but worth it

    i'll be blunt.
don't **** up your future over a car...
an sti swap may be your dream, but graduate, make yourself employable, get a sweet job making 30k right out of school.
    'THEN do the swap.."

and actually, if is is a gsl, they will find out where the money went, and they will come after you.... or swap you out to a high rate...
so worst case scenario, you are making $200 payments a month for a loan on an engine that is sitting at mat's house because you have to work 2 jobs to pay off your loan..

i thought about this my freshman year when i had a 15 thousand dollar check in my hand.

i didn't do it and now i make the big bucks..

Yeah, Not trying to rag on you, but it is much MUCH wiser to try to make it out of college with as little dept as posible. I made it out of college with no dept by working and all. I have more than a well paying job now and I am not struggling to pay off college depts... which some of my freinds are. They had gotten cars, boats or other large toys. They are still paying that stuff off while I own all my cars, and the only thing I am paying off is a house. I just think comparing with my freinds that I have it a little easier.... Last but not least... there will always be a newer car, a faster car, another thing. Just be sure what ever you do it is right for you.

However if you can realy get a loan at 2.77 percent, and reinvest into a CD (Cash Deposit) at 3.25% (25k at 36 Month) that is a profet of .48% per year :D, but you still have to factor tax and initial point investment.

Very sound advise that will effect your future purchases, including a house.
