I was talking to Tom (walloftvs) earlier tonight and I was curious what the "safe" upper boost limit was for the stock wrx turbo, and how one can "safely" achieve it. Both terms are relative, I know. Does anybody here know what boost limits the stock turbo can handle, and what is required to support it? For example, I've examined the logs I took last night and can see that at WOT I am running over 100% on my stock injectors with my Stage II map. So it would appear that before trying to get more power out, one would have to upgrade the injectors. But if you mod the stockers, do you need to upgrade the fuel pump to keep the fuel pressure up?
I would bet with injectors and a pump there is more to be had out of the stock turbo. I think there was a guy on nasioc who was going that route.
I found a thread by ride5000 on Nasioc and he has run over 20psi on the stock turbo. I didn't see him upgrade his injectors, although maybe I missed it. I think he got around it by upgrading his fuel pump and installing an adjustable fuel pressure regulator though. I saw a post stating that the WRX TMIC falls off after 300hp. I suppose that is the next bottleneck?
I think your TD04 will just wear out unusually fast if you start trying to run a lot of boost through it. You can always buy another one, though. Turn your target boost down until your injectors are running at about 95% at those higher RPM's.
Exactly! Seriously, Ride5000 and some of the others said they had 30k+ miles running that boost. I saw a sample of the target boosts and they ramped up the boost in the midrange before turning it back down. Between 20 and 21 psi target at 3500, then down. Now what fun would that be? That said, I know running 100% for extended periods is bad. And I'm running 100% by 5700, and all the way to redline. :eek4: The guys running higher boost on the stock turbo aren't maxing out their injectors according to their logs, which leads me back to upgraded injectors and fuel system.
True but alot of people run 20 psi out of IHI turbos for a while. I don't think the turbos life is going to be shortened that much.
Or they are running leaner AFR targets. I have you running really rich up high. Plus, this is your initial revision and I haven't adjusted anything yet. Once all is said and done, you can pick your target boost up to around 4000ish rpms. From there with a 10.8:1 fuel target the max the injectors can run is about 16.5psi @ 4500rpm and then needs to taper down to 12psi by redline.
No it won't, unless you are maxing the crap out of it, ie, trying to run 17psi @ redline all the time. But if that is the case and you don't have larger injectors, the life of the turbo is the last thing to worry about, lol.
No, I just saw that on Nasioc and had a good laugh. I just had to import it here. And your fingerprints are all over that thread. :hsugh:
Here the start of the thread. It all started with a compressor map for the stock turbo. Go figure. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=988825&page=1 I checked out Ride's website and yes, he has upgraded his turbo along with some other stuff, but he did turn the stocker up to "11" earlier in his career. Page 4 has links to more "crank up the stocker" threads, and if you look carefully, you'll see posts by our own wotvs. :cheers2:
