So I guess I will start this all out where I originally heard the noise, it was shortly after I installed my winter tires (I add this because I didn't hear it with my summers) and I accelerated from a stop under light load up to 3k shifted then again lightly up to 3k where I then dropped the hammer running it up to 6.5k where I shifted firmly into 3rd ... and thats when it happened. It sounded almost like a whining noise that kind of repeated it self 3 times then shortly stopped, the weird thing is the car pulled as if the noise was not there (I have heard that noise can be the syncro's). Now this went on all winter, I could only hear it when all the windows were down and only in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear but I had to make it make the noise. And we come to today, now I have been noticing what I think is some rather strange noises coming from what I believe to be the turbo. Like just as I was coming home from work, when in the vacuum and under initial light load the car makes an odd noise then it goes away somewhere near 15hg. Worst of all I was coming to my off ramp so I put it in neutral and let it coast to the light, while doing so the same (or very similar) noise was made by something from 60-20 then went away.

Now this is my second car, and I guess I am driving more now with the radio down or off than I was last year. But do these cars make funny noises the whole time you drive them or do you think I should have the car looked at by someone?

Check the gas tank fill hole, it might be the gas station fill nozzle still stuck in the hole.

subarus make a lot of noise, but you could have a turbo related problem...or a simple leak in the filter, intake, or one of the many connections.

Jason seriously this one is not in the off topic, there is a time and place.

Come to think of it Nate said there may be a leak in my intake after looking at my logs, I have a stock air box with K&N filter and that is it but I thinking about reinstalling the air intake funnel and buying a GP Moto elbow.

The only thing I have done to it was the BOV I had for a day, I guess that may explain what is happening now but not the whining I experienced this winter.

Chet, not to steer you in another direction, but I've never heard that noise from your car. Are you sure you're not confusing this with noise from your group n engine/pitch mounts?

I'll sell you my CAI, your whining noise will be muffled out by it.

What happens if your in neutral, dead stop, and rev the engine, can you still hear it then?

No I have tired this and I have not heard any noise at a stand still revving the motor.
