So how many of you STi owners have encountered this problem when taking off the calipers on the STi? I have been reading on Nasioc and it seems to be a common occurance to strip the threads. I am debating to have the dealer swap the rotors so i dont have to deal with the problem of fixing what seems inevitable.
meh... not much you can do.. the only way it will strip is if it wastn put in correctly in the first place... loosen slowly... if it binds then tighten up and take to someone who is able to repair it once they remove it all the way
Helicoil. That's pretty much what you're gonna need. I'd take it to someone that knows how to install helicoils.
Installing helicoils is pretty easy as long as you can hold a drill straight. Kit for that size of a bolt will probably be around $40 plus whatever the drill bit required to do it costs.
Not to scare-monger here, but when I installed helicoils on M61A1's in the Navy, I let someone do it that thought they knew what they were doing and broke about 6 helicoils before actually getting one to seat. The drilling is the easy part, the hard part is getting the coil to bury in the hole you made and seat properly without breaking. The can be kinda brittle sometimes.
