Hello Everyone, i have a question. I bought a 2006 Legacy this summer. When i purchased the car i was given all the various additions/accessories/options i could add to the car. Once i heard the dealership talk about the extended warranty, i became interested. I decided to get the extended warranty with the car for 6 years or 80,000 miles. My question comes with the warranty. I ask twice during the process of filling out the purchase agreement if their were any additional charges with the warranty and i was told no. Now i recieved a letter in the mail stating i have to bring the car in because i had hit the 15,000 mile review and the dealership wants to check over the car. They want to charge me approx $400.00 dollars for this check. Anyone else have this situation? ANyone who works for a dealership know were in the purchase agreement this is stated? because i cannot find it. I am concerned because i was told that if i did not bring the car in, the extended warranty that i purchased may be discontinued. Thank you for the responses and have a great day.
An extended warranty is not a service contract. Instead of 3yr/36,000 from the factory you now have 6yr/80,0000. (sort of) The factory warranty does not cover routine maintenance, and neither does the extended warranty. You still have to pay for that. Look in your owner's manual and see what it says to do for 15k and just have them do the items listed. As long as you stick to what is in the book they can't "void your warranty."
Thank you for the response. I am not looking for regular maintance covered. I can do that on my own. I just got a letter in the mail from the dealership saying i needed to bring the car in for a 15,000 (being 30,000 on the car) checkup. They are want to charge me $400.00 dollars just to look over the car. They are saying they can charge me this because it is going to take them 4-6 hours to check every detail (etcc.) on the vehicle. They said that they can void the warranty if i do not bring it in because it did not give them a chance to aviod the problem in advance. I can see trying to avoid the problem in advance...but charging me that amount of money, when i cannot find it written anywhere is bogus.
Sounds fishy! Do I even want to ask where you bought the car from? I had the extended warranty on my 02 WRX and it ran out at 114,000. In that time, I had it in multiple times and they never asked to see any maintenence records...hell, a couple of times they even gave me a rental car which I KNOW wasn't covered in the extended warranty. But, I'm guessing that they may have tightened up the belt on this stuff though.:dunno:
Is it the actual Subaru extended warranty (Gold, Classic?), or another company? I would be interested in the exact wording, afaik they can't just make a blanket threat to void the warranty. They may imply it, but as long as you have either service records (or receipts for oil/filters/etc if you do the work yourself) and perform everything in the manual, they really don't have a leg to stand on. If they really are sticking to it, I would tell them you want to cancel the extended warranty. You can get a refund for the unused portion, which on a 6/80 shoud be a pretty good chunk. Frankly, since the car is still under factory warranty, you have not even dipped into the extended warranty yet, and you should be able to get the entire cost of the extended warranty back. (At least in my mind, though I am not sure it really works like that.)
hmmm...what dealership is this? If you are doing your own maintenance keep your reciepts...ie "oil changes" As far as other maintenance Subaru normally wants you to go to a dealership...$400 just to check the vehicle sounds a bit high...I'm sure they are replacing some parts as well...I believe the spark plugs gets replaced during the process...I could be wrong...
rephrase that...majority of the fluids get replaced...tranny, diff, brake, etc. Its not the dealership that cancels the warranties it is Subaru...Which means if you have a warranty issue and you didn't follow the maintenance of the car, SOA can deny the warranty claim...
The extended warranty is with subaru. I purchased the Gold Plus warranty with the vehicle. I have only put on around 9200 miles so all that has been done to the car are two oil changes. Those oil changes were done at the dealership because they are free. The service they want to do on the car is another oil change, check the fluid levels, hoses transmission and spark plugs. What i am trying to get at, is this a normal service/issue? Can they void the extended warranty if something does go wrong(if i do not bring it in to them)? Does this seem in the range of the correct price? I am just a little frustrated because i was told i did not have any additional costs. I am also paying for school so i did not have this amount alotted into my budget and now i dip into savings if i have it done. Plus if i keep doing this service every 15,000 miles, as the dealership wants me to do, thats an additional $2200.00 on top of the Gold Plus warranty i paid for. Thanks for all the responses.
Did you budget for service/maintenance? $400 is probably in the ballpark for a 30k service, which you should do regardless of whether you have the warranty or not. But if you look into specifically what is part of that service, you can elect to do some of it on your own and save $ that way. They cannot outright void your warranty. What would happen is, if you had a warranty claim in the future, they would have to prove that it was neglect on your part that caused the damage. If you have dated receipts for oil/filters/plugs/tranny fluid/whatever that would constitute proof on your end that you kept up with the required maintenance. Keeping a notebook of what you do (dates/mileage) would be a good idea as well.
Not sure if the Legacy follows the same maintenance schedule as the STI but plugs are not swapped til 60k. 30k is all fluids but power steering, fuel filter, air filter. Then there's all the checks: brakes, tires, clutch, parking brake, etc. Have you signed up at my.subaru.com? If not do so. Your maintenance schedule and what they do will be on there.
That's close to what I posted...again keep your reciepts if you do any maintenance yourself or by another tech/mech. I don't believe the spark plugs are due until 60k just fluid changes @ 30k... I'm sure if you go elsewhere other than a dealership to replace the fluids it maybe up to $100 less...The 60k is gonna be the one that cost a bit more, due to the spark plugs, fluids, routine tune-ups, etc. Talk to BP or Mntka they have a discount for service and parts for members...
I believe all the 06+ models are @ 60k for plugs, I think Subaru switch all the models at that year up to platniums...correct me if I'm wrong
