    I could cry. :emo:

Driving my 2001 Subaru Impreza RS 2.5 last night I got T-Boned by a guy in a jeep. It happened on the U of M campus at the intersection of Union St. SE and Beacon St. SE.

The jeep made a left turn from Beacon onto Union, cutting through a backed up line of traffic in the middle lane and ran right into my driver's side door.

It looks bad :eek3: but I actually think it might be mostly body damage. I'm taking it to Morrie's Mtka. Subaru on Monday morning so they can fix it (on Progressive's bill ;) ).

Here's some photos of the Subie, and one of the Jeep. I'll continue to update as I process some better photos of my smashed car. Then when it's fixed we'll how see how good of a job Morrie's does. Hope they treat her right, she's a great car.

I sure hope it's only cosmetic.

Looks like it would be a good time to get a set of fender braces installed though... :)

Yeah - I'm going to UMN for a Computer Engineering degree so I'm in the lot on like 5th Ave and 17th St/Church St or whatever every single day. I also cut through campus on my way home from work because I can't exactly take 35W straight through at the moment. It's probably me you see, cause I've only seen one other silver 4 door impreza in this body style around the cities so far (and that was actually a block away from where I live, but he doesn't have leather  ).

Also, I've been looking awfully closely at the damage, and from what I can tell, the only questionable spot is right above and in front of the front tire. The smashed in body piece connects to something that appears to be structural. It looks like that might not have gotten bent, though.

Also, amazingly, the driver's door hinges appear to be unharmed in any way despite the significant taco-ing of the door - and the window can still travel all the way up and down. I only hope the can keep the inner parts of the door - it's all Dynamatted, but that seems unlikely (it's pretty well bent up).

Another odd thing is that the spoiler appears to have come loose. Strange, but probably easily fixed.

Hopefully I can get them to repaint the whole vehicle, too - it needed it (flaking). Unfortunately, I'll lose the custom decals, I would guess.

Now it's a waiting game. Waiting for it to get fixed and waiting for the insurance company to assign fault to other driver (it was, after all) so I don't get killed by my $1000 deductible. Oofta.

(And sorry folks - didn't get the other photos processed yet, tomorrow perhaps)

Hey Hey Hey... I have a jeep and I'm a responsible driver. I've never hit anyone or caused any accidents and have no violations on my record. So give jeep people a break and don't forget, there are a lot of stupid Subaru drivers too :emo:

oooooh, thats not good. If it was just the door and the fender, I'd say its not totaled. With the damage on the rear quarter, I think you might not be so lucky. How many miles?

Don't even mess around with your company unless you need the car asap. Call the other owners company directly and open a claim with them. Less hassle.

Cut out? That doesn't sound nice. Not a replaceable as a whole piece, then?

I was hoping I could get them to repaint the entire car - figuring that replacing two or three pieces they would not be able to get it to match well (and paint was flaking off in spots).

I REALLY don't want this car to get totaled. It's beautiful and awesome and somewhat uncommon. Not to mention is has many extras like remote start, dynamat, and a somewhat ridiculous stereo. I'll basically be down thousands if it gets totaled cause none of that stuff really gets accounted for.

It's already all in motion. My company (Progressive) has actually been very prompt and helpful so far. And when I told them that I was going to check with Morrie's Subaru as my first choice for repair they said, "Great. We work with them all the time. Let's set it up."

the rears are integrated in the shell of the car, they cut them out and replace them, it would require a full respray

Can they do that well? Blend it in so it's not noticeable that a piece was cut out and replaced. Is it structurally sound afterwards?

Cutting it out and welding in a replacement is the only way to fix that in the rear. Structurally its fine. Just remember, your whole car is spot welded together.

You could replace it as a whole piece, but its the whole back corner or the car, and would require drilling out all the spotwelds that hold it to the rest of the structure. Not fun.

And you can blend paint. Silver and gray colors can be tricky sometimes. Its all about getting the metallic right on. In your instance, they'll be blending almost half the car.

its most difficult with silvers with metallic as you need to get the flake to lay the same direction, if the pigments and metallic lay odd (see Shibb's car) it will be blatantly obvious

Thanks for the info. I just get very trepidatious when other people have to work on my vehicles - especially this one because I love it soo much and especially because this work is quite significant.

I'd so much rather they just repaint the entire car. Anyone know if that's much more expensive then trying to blend in the replaced parts?

you will be repainting the whole front and entire drivers side along with the trunk and bumpers already, whole repaint is only logical and honestly less difficult.

    That's what I like to hear. :)

And I was thinking that will be the case - with all the pieces needing paint that it would just be easier to do the whole thing.

Boy, afterwards this car will REALLY be de-badged! The only Subaru-indicative lettering left on the exterior of the vehicle will be a small "2.5 RS" on the spoiler. That's okay by me, though.

This sucks to see! I have seen you driving around campus alot recently.

I am not too sure about that structural piece you are talking about behind the fender but it could just be the fender brace with is easily replaced. The rear 1/4 does suck though. as long as a compitent body shop is working on it you will never know it was replaced. A friend of mine had to have his rear 1/4 replaced on his WRX and you couldnt tell the difference. That was done at S3 auto in Lorretto. I highly recommend them.

Matching the paint will be tough. It can be blended but you might be blending over the entire car. It might not cost too much more to repaint the whole thing.

Maybe it is just the fender brace. I wouldn't know by looking, since I know very little about auto mechanics and even less about auto bodies.

And yeah, I feel like I live on campus most days this spring - especially since it's become my alternate route home around the 35W bridge.

I hear many good things about Morrie's - so I'm hoping their body work is up to par. I spoke with someone named Jackie from the place in Long Lake and she at least seemed to know about the issues with that back 1/4. They also seemed like they'd be very accomodating and either try to save the dynamat or else replace it on a new door as well as treat the speakers and wiring nicely and move them into a new door if necessary.

I really appreciate everyone's support here, too. Having my car smashed really sucks, and you folks are helping tons! Thanks. ;)

    Update

Dropped the Subie off at Morrie's this morning. Tim from the body shop eyeballed it and said it would be spendy. The guy who came to drive it to the Long Lake shop gave me a bit of a razzing - can't blame him, I'd give me a hard time too. Rental car SUUUUCKSS!!!! Now we'll just wait and see.

    Another Update

Just spoke with the Progressive adjuster out at the Long Lake body shop.

The good news is that they are going to fix it. The estimate came in a bit over $4000 and they value the car without any of the extra goodies at close to $9000.

The shop decided not to cut any of the rear panel off. They are going to pound it out and reform the wheel line. The whole front door is being replaced, but they did manage to salvage the dynamat and they'll reapply it to the new door as well as move the Alpine Type-R component speakers and crossover into the new door for me along with the tinted glass.

Then the obvious, they'll replace the front panel and the fender brace that got bent, the repeater light (blinker under the side mirror), the left blinker assembly, even the RS decal on the side. Then they'll take the front bumper off to fix it up along with the rear taillight (needs some buffing).

As for paint - they're only going to do the whole drivers side, despite my voiced concerns that it will be visibly different from the rest of the car. Hope they get that right and matching.

Bad news - it's going to be at least 2 weeks before it's done. Ugh, this Chevy Cobalt they gave me as a rental really, really sucks. It's the epitome of crappy American auto engineering.

At least it's going to get fixed.

If they are good, you won't be able to notice the blend. They'll have to buff the whole car, so it should look sharp when done.

Good to hear they're fixing it. When you posted first I was ready to bet on it being called a total loss.
