    sudden windsheild failure

I was un my way home from Forest lake tonight wend my winsheild developed about a 4 foot crack along the bottom, pretty much all at once. I think it may have been a heat stress problem but it seems a little weird ( I didn't clear my windsheild well and turned the defroster up as high as it would go). The windsheild just cracked almost allthe way across at the bottom with one big snap. I'm fairly sure that it wan't a rock since I was pretty much the only car on the road for a quarter mile in each direction. Has any one else experienced anything like this? my windsheild is probably only 4 months old.

Yup. Mine just cracked about 1 month ago and it seems for no reason at all. There's some posts on IWSTI about it.

My old '04 had a huge crack across the entire bottom that started out as a tiny rock chip. I had the chip for probably a year and then one night when it was REALLY cold (like -15*F) out it just cracked and scared the **** out of me. I thought somebody shot my car, lol. The defroster was on at the time also, fyi.

This happened to me in my old Caprice. Same thing, driving, defroster on, and BOOM! Scared the crap out of everyone in the car. Yes, there was a tiny chip there first.

90's GM cars were infamous for that. I had a friend who had a Buick ,and guarenteed, if you turned the heat up on high on defrost it would crack the windshield. He kept telling his wife not to, but a few months later she'd crank it up again, and need a new windshield.

Back in the 80's on our full size wagon my mom turned on the rear defroster and the WHOLE window shattered into 1/8" to 1/4" pieces. She thought it was ice on the inside so she asked me to scrape it off. I put my hand right through the whole window. Crazy... always warm up your car inside a little before running rear defrost.

Not sure as I bought it used. With all the pits I'm guessing original.
