my neighbor sunk his brothers 2003 firecat 500 today and im probably going to be the one to fix it, so i was wondering what im going to have to do to get it going again. i wasnt there when it happened but all i know is that it was under about 5 and a half feet of water for about 1.5 to 3 hours, and he had the throttle pinned but he wasnt going anywhere so he let off and it killed. He tried starting it and it ran for no more than 5 seconds but it did fire. any help is appreciated

look for a new motor. And hope to God that is all you need to fix it.

Reason being he had the throttle wide open when the thing submerged. I can almost bet teh engine made a few rotations before it siezed to a halt and died. More than likely there is water inside the motor and therefore the bearings and such will be ruined. You might get lucky and have them salvageable, but you will have to disassemble the entire motor and clean it out and then check everything for rust.

I know that if you kill the throttle befor water gets to it it should be ok...but if he drove it into the water with throttle going hes dumb and it will need a new motor

Yeah, when I sunk my sled the motor was fine, all I had to do was get the water out of the cylinders and change all the fluids. I also oiled and greased every possible bearing, bushing, cable, etc to make sure they wouldn't rust or corrode. I took the seat cover off and dried out the foam inside. I never had any water related problems afterwards.

There should be a plug under the motor, pull that and let it drin. Pull the plugs and pull it over for a while. put some oil in the cylinders and let it sit over night. Most of the water in the crank will dry up when you run it. I would be sure to put lots of oil in the cylinders over the summer so nothing rusts.

If he held the throttle when he was going under he most likly did damage, the snowmobile will probably still run ok but it wont last long.\

I tried all kinds of things with the seat but could never get it completlt dry.
I traded the snowmobile in for a new one a few weeks later:)

    also do what Joel said^^^

I doubt he went down with it pinned, you would have to be waist deep in water to do so, in other words he was likely pinned, knew he was ****ed and jumped off and let the sled sink.
the most important part is to get the sled running within 24 hours of it happening,( its not science, rather a rule of thumb) it sounds like a big deal but it actually happens all the time, I sank my jetski a few times, and as long as you get it running within the next day you are fine.
and erik, if you are talking about the 700, he didnt even put new rings in it, he drained it and ran it, in fact it still hasnt had even a top end since then, which was 3 years ago.

point is, drain the gas, oil, and pull the plug on the bottom of the engine, start it up and ride the piss out of it for at least an hour

    step 2:

    sell it at haydays lol

yea so i guess he started about 5 feet from the edge of the pond and gunned it, then he got about 10 feet with the throttle pinned and started sinking so he kept going until the seat was under, then he let off and it sank to the bottom. after he got it out he immediatly tryed to start it, and then he flipped it upside down to drain it and then kept trying. exactly what a highschooler that is panicing and knows nothing about engines would do.
