Me and a couple buddies washed and waxed last night and went out for a test shoot in Minneapolis. Here are the shots. Some turned out pretty good. I'm still getting used to low light shooting. But, overall got some good shots. I may submit some to the COTM contest, but I want to have another shoot to make sure I've got some really good ones. nice lighting on a few of them. but as for composition goes, your cutting off a lot of cars. keep the whole car in the photo and dont let it bleed off the edge of the shot. it makes it look imcomplete. and dont let objects cut through the view of the car as well. you have the right idea but keeping your subject in full view is important. you wouldnt expect someone who wants portrat shots to be uncentered and maybe their ear missing cuz you aimed too much to the side would you? lol another tip for car shots is to try as much as you can to leave room in the photo for the car to "move into". that means leaving some room infront of the car to give it better balance when viewed. i like the photos though. keep on shooting and maybe try some of these tips. i had these passed to me a while ago when i was starting to shoot.
Thanks for the tips! I just hate centered photos. I like to keep it abstract if at all possible. But yea, if it was a paid shoot I'd make sure to get the customer what they wanted.
well im not saying centered. but try to keep the intire car in the photo. giving the car room to move into means it wont be centered because that means you leave more room at the front of the car than at the back. being paid or not. you should strive to do as best you can. money shouldnt be your only reason to make photos look their best.
Yikes I don't think he meant, "well since I am not getting paid, I am going to do a half assed job". I think what he said was more along the lines of, "I took some pictures in a certain way to produce a certain look, and if the circumstances were different, and someone were paying me to take pictures of their car, I would have done things differently... " To the OP: I like the shots, and I love the cars
Thanks! Yea it was just a test shoot, trying out different light, angles, speeds, apertures, etc. Just seeing what the outcome would be. I take any advice to heart though, being a beginner in the photography field. These were taken with a beginner model DSLR if anyone was interested, Olympus Evolt E-410.
Nice work. I particularly like this one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mctenold/3702878523/ Where did you shoot these?
Thanks, I liked the way the bricks and dirt turned out in that one. These were shot in/around the Warehouse District in Minneapolis.
some good shots! Looks liek you had some light coming from behind a chain fence. Some of the pics arent really clear and the pattern looks kinda cool in some but in others i think it kinda makes teh car look bad. This could also be do to the compression of the pics.
Yea there are a few pics where a fence shadow was casting onto the cars. In particular, this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mctenold/3702817299/in/set-72157621030990439/
I love that first pic man...lmk if you want to throw some WRB in the mix. I'm planning on doing some waxing/claybar tomorrow morning
Cool, where do you live/work? I plan on going out after work for the rest of the week. I'll just stay around here (Warehouse District) though because there are a lot of good spots. PM me or something if anyone wants to join in. I get off work at ~5:30pm and head out from here.
Nice pics Corey. I tagged along on the photo journey (with the silver Bugeye) and snapped a few pics myself. Check them out.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/timdunklee/sets/72157621192375716/
