Say if for instance I have a drive by wire intake manifold, can I simply install a cable throttle body if I want to installit on a 2005 or older block, or do I have to get an older wrx intake mannifold?
I have an sti intake manny just sitting around and I think I'me going to have an easier time doing this build with a cable throttle body, or... does it make more sense to get the peddle box and 06 wrx ecu and set the car up as a drive by wire opperated car? me thinks it will be easier to do this with a cable throttle body.... but I'm kinda a newb to the franken build concept.
I have an idea as to what heads/block and internals I will use.... but the intake is where I'm left completely clueless, I could keep the stock intake manni but.... I don't know how well the 1.8 intake manni flows? also the throttle body?
They are different that doesnt mean a regular throttle wont bolt up though. if you have it off of the car, and have a regular wrx style throttle, try it out. If you are using wrx heads, the 1.8 manifold wont bolt up, hell it wont bolt up to anything but a 1.8 or 2.2. if you are gonna be using NA 2.5 SOHC or DOHC heads, you'll also need a 2.5 intake manifold too.
so if I was to use a ej255/257 block, I would intur have to use a wrx or an sti style tgvs and intake manni? but if I use a 2.2 block I can use my 1.8 manni.... did I understand that right? Does that work for both the 2.2t and the 2.2 na?
so to go topfeed I think I would want to go with either a ej20t, or an ej255/257?...... that sound right?
A 22T manifold is a bit different in the IAC valve design as there is a one-way valve. 3rik has ran his 22E manifold just fine though. What kind of car are you trying to do this in? "Only" 300 whp in something older is going to be significantly harder and much more expensive than in a new age WRX.
93 impreza wagon, it is a 1.8 awd, and I'm trying to figure aout what I can reuse from my 06 wrx build. I kinda would like to re use a few coice components, if they don't sell for what I'm asking. I think I'd like to stay topfeed, but I think I'm going to run into lots of engine managment gremlins if I was to try going DBW... so what I'm think right know is ported 2.0 wrx heads on a ej 255/257 short block with my tgv deletes and dbw intake manni, but try to bolt on a cable driven tb, and use mega sqirt for engine managment. is that feesable? or should I focus on selling all the 06wrx build stuffs and? and just use a 2.5 na block and do a total junk yard build?
Does anyone have a Subaru ran purely by a Megasquirt, using the factory cam and crank triggers? I know people have been working on it, but I've only seen cars that ran on the 'squirt using EDIS wheels and triggers. Otherwise people use them as piggy-backs, but I won't get into that :raise: With this route you will need a cable TB unless you do all the wiring necessary for a newer ECU, or get a higher end standalone like a Hydra or G4. IMHO, those are still the best option even with a cable TB. Unless you are pretty savvy yourself, the Megasquirt is a handful and has a lot of quirks to deal with if you want it to work properly. Also, a generic one is not a good idea if you don't have the capability to modify the firmware within the Megasquirt. There are people that will tailor the units and software to what you need, but of course that costs money. There is some success with the Perfect Power 6, but it still has issues to work around being a piggy back.
yeah I'm just getting my feet wet it seems, I sure do like the idea of all the tinkering needed to make somthing work, but I don't want to start down a path where I don't forsee the difficulties ahead. I think mega squirt would best be used as a piggy back to the stock ecu, maybe a stand alone is the best way to do this? but I'm trying not to buy parts that are overkill for what my plans are. I want to build a fun fast and disposable subaru. where parts can be found in about any junk yard and I don't have to break the bank. hell... maybe I should go with a 2.2l and not go down this road.
The thing is, 300whp in an old Subaru is a lot and will take a lot to get there. Not to mention the driveline issues. 200whp is the other way around, though.
got it, I gues the goal I WAS setting, is high..... maybe I hould get my feet wet first, and mess around with the 1.8 till it blows, then after actualy doing some of this stuff, I should consider a more complex build. or I could just have at her and learn as I go, it would prolly cost twice as much and take twice as long and cause 10 times the problems. it is just so tempting to try the complex build off the bat.
Its not that you can't use what you have already fairly easily, its using that stuff to its potential is the hard part. Sure you could run a 20g at 8psi cheaply and in a simple fashion, its just extracting the power a turbo like that is capable of and having it last more than ten minutes is the challenge. Newer cars benefit from complex and comprehensive ECU's that are user tunable. All the old stuff gives us the finger in terms of modifiability.
Mine makes 200 whp, its daily driveable and incredibly reliable, but I'm not sure it could be exactly replicated, my car is a freak of nature. Lots of trial and error.
^ Bingo. I'm sure you've thought about going past that and how things get exponentially expensive and complicated, as well as less reliable. Trial and error is my middle name, :laugh:
Well, this sounds more and more fun as we go! I think there are many challanges ahead of me, this will be fun going beyond the land of bolt on performance!
OKay, now.... I have some ported ej20 heads from an 04' wrx comming my way and if I'm reading correctly these won't fit on my 1.8 intake manni..... and I will need a wrx style intake manni to fit these heads? I was thinking about running them on a 2.5l block, but it is sounding like this is going to be the most complicated route possible. what I'm thinking I want to do 2.5l or 2.2l block ej20 heads wrx style intake runners with tgv deletes topfeed wrx fuel rail.... parallel feed am I shooting myself in the foot by trying this? will this so much more difficult then a 2.2 block with 2.5 na heads using the intake manni from from a 2.5 na? should I sell the heads and install the valve train in some from the wrx heads in a 2.5na head? just trying to think this out and get others input.
You'll need to get a wrx harness and ECU if you want to use the full potential of those heads, if you stay with the 2.5 n/a heads and 2.2 block, it will be less complicated but you will still need some kind of standalone or something like one.
so I should stay on the look out for a wrx ecu, and wire harness! this is encouraging! I think this will be alot of fun! so basicly I will also need a wrx MAF sensor and.... will I be able to use the stock pedal box? or will I need a different pedal box too? what other sensors will I need if I was to use a wrx ecu?
just got some 2006 sti injectors in the mail???? they were suposed to be 2006 wrx injectors...... wtf????? I needed these to be topfeeds..... I'm pissed.
