Consider replacing the tensioner depending on how many miles you have on the car, it's cheap insurance.

^ most likely since you will be taking the timing belt off anyway might as well replace some stuff.

oohh, make sure to get a OEM timing belt they have fancy little marks to help line up with teh cam gears. makes it much easier!

Is that the new SOA- MNSubaru suggested mantenance schedule.

Bill, almost forgot...do a search, I can't remember where I seen it but there was a kit that included a number of the above mentioned items. I think it may have been ebay....

I won't do anything but an oem timing belt. My dad did once and it only lasted about half the time...

Inspect all the idler pulley's for smoothness when spinning. The small one next to the tentioner is the one that fails the most.

    +75

I've had 4 timing belt breaks in the last 3 years as a result of the idler (all on EA82s....inferior design...but also non-interference, so other than 15 minutes of inconvenience, no damage done).

I would definitely replace the tensioner, and at the very least, take a gooood look at those idlers (3 of them, IIRC).

and yea, good time to replace the water pump, front main seal, cam seals, and oil pump seals. hate to have those start leaking, and have to tear in there again.

the EJ22e that's now in my loyale has almost 250k miles on it now. my dad did both timing belt jobs on it in it's entire existence and both times just did the belt and water pump. it has great oil pressure, and doesn't leak any oil from the seals.

these aren't things that are necessarily prone to failure. but are a total pain to get at should they fail. in the interest of preventing future down time, it's usually worth it to spend the few extra bucks to do it right.

I'm going to do tbelt #3 on it later this summer....and it'll be getting all that stuff.

I changed my oil pump well becuase it got mangled when i took the stupid crank gear off. otherwise the oil pump keeps itself pretty well lubricated and is a huge worry. the seal can go bad and cuase you to leak a decent amount of oil. (i was loosing 1qt every 1k miles)

the front main seal should be done it isnt very much $$ and it SUPER EASY. pop the old one out stick the new one in and done.

its not a huge deal if you do these or not. to check just see if you are leaking oil. if its from the oilpump/front main seal there will be oil dripping down off of the oil pump. if the cam seals are leaking it will be dripping from the timing belt cover right under the cam gears.

I suggest getting the belt, tensioner and small idler for sure. Check the rest of the idlers and the waterpump, cam seals and crank seal when you are in there. It's been hit and miss on the rest of the stuff, but the first three items are going to need to be done for sure.
