I need to get the timing belt done on my wrx (02) and wanted to know if there was anyone doing them on the side. I'm trying to save some cash and maybe help someone out at the same time with some extra cash. Or if I should just bite the bullet and go to the dealer. Thanks Steve.

I was/am in the same boat. Got lots of recommendations for turbo_turtle (dan). He quoted 1,000 but I wanted some other stuff done with it (thermostat, water pump, etc.) There are some good threads already going on this topic for a) the T-belt and preventative maintenance and b) willing and able subaru mechanics in the TC area.

from what ive heard valve adjust's on subarus are not so easy, from the way the heads are in the car and also using shims. couple guys i talked to said they pull the motor to do them... then again the guys i talk to are honda tech's so im sure there are some tricks they might not know about. they basically told me its a big job. just my 2 cents, could be wrong.

Am i correct in thinking the EJ20T does not have hydraulic lifters and its valves should be adjusted at certain intervals? What are these intervals? How crucial is this?

yeah pretty sure they are not hydraulic. it uses buckets and shims. not sure on the intervals i would guess around 105k with the tbelt?

    Just want to clarify here...

I charge $75 to change a timing belt. If you want the water pump and coolant changed with that, then it is $125. If you want to add on changing all the pulleys and oil pump seals, then it is $150 total. So my prices are in line with AWDImprezaL's prices.

The $1000 price is for the full 105k maintenance in labor and in parts, plus coolant, hoses, belts, pulleys, etc, assuming that everything needs to be changed. Not all cars need all that stuff, but that is all things that should be considered while doing the timing belt. Changing all the pulleys is quite expensive.

The $150 is my LABOR price, parts are extra, (I work at a subaru dealer, so I can swing some decent deals)

Yes, the parts are expensive. If you were to buy all the parts to change everything related to the timing belt (pulleys, tensioner, belts, etc), I estimate $676 in PARTS.

So if you continued adding the remaining parts AND labor for everything at the 105k miles maintenance period, then you are looking close to $1000.

Considering how much you might spend on just a couple of pulleys rather than all of them, wouldn't you just replace them all, I did, that is other than the serp tensioner. Guess what, that bearing went bad 2 weeks after I did the tbelt.

Yes, you should just replace all the pulleys related to the timing belt, assuming they all have 105k miles on them. If someone has me just replace the timing belt without changing the pulleys, I won't warranty my work if there is a problem. A worn pulley will cause everything else to wear quickly.

There are kits/parts, such as Gates, who supply replacement parts for less then OEM. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with Gates, but I still recommend OEM. Hard to pass up Gates when they are about a third of the price though.

Sure you can. Equal quality for less is better in my book. And there are numerous options to do just that.

In my experience, Gates has been pretty close to OEM quality.

My thoughts on Timing belt jobs and where to get great parts without paying out that ass for it

On an interference motor I wouldnt put any parts in that dont have a warranty, expecially how fast wrxs eat through pulleys, say hello to bent valves. I forget who bought a "kit" online and it failed less than 10K later, but it was someone from here, they ended up paying dearly afterwords.
