Hey all Just wondering if anyone here in MN has tinted their taillights? I've seen this mod on many cars but most them end up being from out of state where laws differ. The only law i've heard here was that the tail/brake lights must be visible from 500ft. away. Has anyone done this to their car? Anyone have or have heard of problems with being bothered by coppers? I also wouldn't want the tint to be too dark, no need to increase my chances of being rear ended. My '02 WRX is midnight black, i've also recently debadged it. The pic below is just an example of what i'd like to do to mine. Thanks for the info all Its great working at 5:00 am and hitting the roads before the plows get to em, ye haw!
My understanding is that you'll get burned a hell of a lot faster with tinted tailights then too dark windows. Atleast in minnesootah.
Yeah I did mine a while ago. I have gotten a ticket for my tint but not for my tail lights. Bought em from hotsubarus.com. This is the smoke look, you can get stealth which is darker. Note that this picture is in the evening and looks darker. Also, I might be able to make trip to firestone this weekend if you want to take a look at them.
Dang that looks sweet. I wonder if my car would draw more attention being that its black and the taillights would blend in more. Hmmmm. Where is Firestone? Looks as if your front lights are tinted as well. Do they still shine pretty bright through the tint? Have tested the rear lights from 500 ft.? Thanks for posting up, very cool to see some WRX's in MN with smoked out lights
To be totally honest with you, i think tinting the headlights was not a good idea FOR ME as i do a lot of night driving to MSP. However, I LOVE the look of my lights. I have not tested them but the tail lights are pretty bright. Yeah I always thought of it 'ricey' but gave in and now i really like it. Firestone is on university ave. this will be my first trip there too. Guys usually get there between 8 and 9. You can find more info in the following thread: http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2222
I really like the 'evil' look your WRX has. I just wished that they made a tint just slightly dark enough to tell a difference from being stock... but I think that's just me. :?
we offer the smoke spray and the titanium spray. The titanium is alot less noticeable. Makes them look alittle darker than stock. But the idea with it is that the light output is not reduced. It has been really popular with our MN customers, worried about getting pulled over. We ran out of the smoke and titanium. We currenly have another batch coming from JPN. We offer the service for $50 a pair. More if the lights require being pulled from the vehicle. If you guys want too you can send your lights to us or I could get brian to stock some of the spray for you guys. And we always offer mail order on our products too. No tax and shipping would be $3.00. I can get current pricing on this in a few days for those of you that want the spray to DIY. This is not the Cheap paint from your local hobby shop.
Sweet Thanks again beeloo I may just have to head up there, friday or saturday? Sounds like some fun. Never gets old looking at a bunch of Subies. Not sure i'd do the headlights myself but the taillights are what I think really needs to be done on my car. I know i've seen about 3 different levels of tint. Here's a closeup of what i'm assuming are the ones you have, "smoke" tint. They look to be more transparent in this pick. Suppose at some angles they could be pretty dark but being able to see the amber and red through them is just what I want. http://www.hotsubarus.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=189 Did you install the tint yourself? Fairly easy with the stick on? Not sure i'd wanna mess with the spray. At least I could take the tint sticker off if it were to be a problem with getting tickets constantly for some reason. Later
you will never be able to "tint" the taillights. the surface will not allow for a good job. The spray is removable. and the clean up is way better than if you used actual tint or tape. We sell the remover also. All in all the spray is win win.
Well, when are you geting the spray in next? By the 21st? I had just ordered the taillight tint, but since you guys want $60 just to install it on top of the $60 I spent to buy it, I will cancel that order. especially if its just $50 for the spray. But do you have a ETA on when you will have spray available?
tint= sticker The "tint" i'm speaking of and what is shown above in this same post are are made from pvc vinyl so its basically a sticker. Similar to what is put on windows I assume? So your spray tint, the cost for the spray, enough for both taillights. Could I apply the spray myself? $50 for a can of spray? What exactly is the spray? are you local? Thanks for the info
They have a shop in Burnseville. For $50 to spray tailights thats the route I'm going to go. We'll see how it looks.
Sweet Yup, that is exactly what i bought and yes you can see amber and other lights. As i said, my picture is not a fair judgement as it was taken in the evening .. for example compare the PSM color of my car to another picture of a PSM car in daylight. you'll see what i am talking about. I can swing by firestone on any day friday/sat. Depends on when everyone else is going to show up. It was definitely a pain in the butt to put on esp the taillights took me forever. It is not a clean install either, there are some bubbles that still show. I had to use soapwater, a wiper, and a hair dryer to get it on. Curves were the hardest. It definitely took me 2 hours to do both the lights. Soooo.. after tintmasters's post, i would suggest going with them as it is simple, cheap, and removable. However, not to be a skeptic.. i've heard that paints don't stick to the lights. So would look for examples or pictures by their shop. IMHO
Brian will have the smoke spray in a week. 5 cans of it. It just got released from port today. It basically takes a can to do a pair of lights. I usually sell it at $30-35 a can. Depends on exchange. The titanium spray is comming sometime soon... I hope. We have stocked this for 10 years. Now for some reason it is finally taking off. I have it on my Ram dually. On everything but the headlights, even the cab lights. Many car washes later and it is still holding strong. There is a "life" to everything. But I cannot read japanese so I am not sure what they expect... As far as it coming off, that may have something to do with how it was applied. I have already ordered more I will try and post up some pics when I get this truck washed. we also have it on our H2 and one of these days we will get the magnum coated too. I am waiting for the titanium to do our Sti.
Well, my car is scheduled for the 21st. I would like my brake lights done also. Will it be in Burnsville by then?
IT should be. It is UPS's hands now. Should be to me buy monday ot tuesday. Then I will get them to brian. So we should be in good shape.
