I just put on my 18's, that I purchased over the winter. Now I need tires. Where can I get the best deal? I'm thinking Bridgestone pole position's. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Also I looking for some springs, slightly lower, better performance. mac-leg

What are you going to do with teh car?? You will need to decide that before anyone can give you a GOOD recomendation on tires. Like the above post, if you plan on autocrossing/track your car, those tires will suck. But if it is just going to be a street cruiser, they will be fine.

Have you read the reviews on that tire? Have you driven that tire? Have you raced that tire? I have. I'm going to recommend it as tire of the year. Until someone comes up with a tire that performs better then that one and makes it last longer then it's 80,000mi warranty.

Judging by the users previous posts, the vehicle won't be autoXd. Some people around here are very quick to jump down throats huh?

I have. Its a "consumer reports" type tire for people who want tires to last for five years.

you don't get good performance from tires that last five years. period. most of the people who own it on tire rack seem to be putting it on minivans. just because they put a new V shaped tread on there doesn't make it a performance tire, or even close.

Like most people I prefer to have good winter tires and good summer tires, so I've not had a chance to spend so much on one set of mediocre tires that covers both. At least you can find better performing, higher speed rated all seasons too that wear better. Toyo proxes 4's come to mind.

you'd be the first. What kind of race was this? I dont think I have ever seen someone say "gee, I'm looking for a good tire that is also a competent race tire" and came up with goodyear assurance triple treads. These tires exits to be sold to people to put on minivans.

Look at the size chart! Its not even like they intended to make it in any sizes that would even be commonly used for a tire someone would mount on a race type wheel. Everything about the specs say completely average tire for general purpose vehicle, absolutely nothing indicates it has any performance pedigree at all (not to mention a glance at the sizing chart indicates they don't even make them for 18 inch wheels so they would not be a good recommendation in this case). Its not even rated by Goodyear in their performace tire category at all, its not a high performance all season, its not an ultra high performance all season, ITS NOT EVEN A PERFORMANCE ALL SEASON. It's a general duty passenger car tire and it probably handles like it.

If it didn't people who race cars would be talking about it, which they're not. All they do is talk about tires and these don't rate in that world.

And I'm going to strongly disagree with that.

Not jumping down anyone's thoat, but you might want to re-read your response. Just stating facts. We need to know what the car is going to be used for before we can recomend a tire.

Yup. Pretty much any all season tire is going to suck when compared to a deticated summer tire.

That's why russ was asking for some specifics, so a recommendation could be made based on the OPs needs. Not so anyone could jump down your throat.

My recommendation would be falken azenis (because I live and die by them and am most probably a bit of a brand whore, but I've had good luck with them). But that would be a completely stupid suggestion if all the OP needs is a good performing all season tire that leans towards better dry performance than snow or vice versa. It's all trade offs, to claim one tire is the bestested compared to all others is just silly statement without any knowledge of what the tire is going to used for.

So, to the OP, I love azenis... If you want all seasons, I'm not sure there because I don't use them. What you're looking for would probably be helpful for tire recommendations.

I've been very happy with the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s I've rolled on for the last few years (not the original Pilot Sport, mind you, the PS2, much better tire, the original was a spec tire for some racing series and had some compromises, probably to slow speeds).

They're a bit spendy ($227/ea in 225/40-18) though, and i might just go with something like the BFG KDW for a more all-round tire since I spend significant time on gravel roads. And they're a lot cheaper (~$150ea for 18s, $125ea for my 17s) if I take one down.

Hi All, Russ, my car is for fun, maybe some x's. I think I mentioned that I just took off my winters, or maybe I didn't. Looking for summers.
Also springs. I hope this helps with what people are thinking for me.

    Price range?

If you're looking cheap-ish fun, Kumho Ecsta MX or SPT (SPT is a little lower performing, a little cheaper, probably a little less harsh) can be had for $108 or $89 each, respectively, from Tire Rack.

I just got my new tires, but they were spendy. 225/40ZR18 Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD07 at a think 212 a tire, but I had spent a while looking at tires and figured why not have my car have the best year of its life this year.

previously i did goodyear f1-g3 tires, and was tempted to use them again. i thought they handled great, and had good wet traction (I like corning in wet too). and they were running for 172 i think for 18" when i checked at tirerack.

I would pm shorty and stop by the shop he works at, I think he can order in anything you might want and I took my car there to get my tires put on my rims, and hand torqued my wheels onto my car with great care!

they are just north of eden prairie, right off of 494 north.

In that case, I highly recommend the azenis. I've also heard good things about the ecstas and neovans. I'd say start with those 3 and see what the price is then choose based on price. They should all be good performing tires that are still competitive at the autocross.

I love my Kumho ASX's (ultra high performance all-season) they work pretty darn good in the dry and wet and since you don't need them for winter i can skip my mixed review about them in the winter slop.
    They run about $88 a piece for a 225 18 and about $116 for a 235.

But hey that is just my opinion. If you want some super traction the azenis or the hankook ventus are pretty decent ones.

go with the rt-615's. They are going to work great in the dry stuff and not to bad in the wet. besides, how often are you really going to push the can when it is wet out. i would also guess that you could pick them up for around 1-125 each.

here are the azenis 18 inch wheel sizes:

    255/35/18
    265/35/18
    315/30/18

they are good max performance street summer tires but to be honest i'd recommend the new hankook z212 more for a non race car. They have grip in the neighborhood of the azenis, but wear far better. I'm actually thinking of switching from azenis this year to the kooks simply becuase I am going back to grad school and would like some summer tires that will last two years instead of one. Sure i'll give up a few secs on the autox course, but it might be worth it to have a more durable tire. Azenis' wear TERRIBLY. I destroy a set every summer.

Granted I am putting at least 80 autocross runs on my tires per season, so my mileage per tire is much worse than the average person. I generally rack up about 2-4k street miles a summer depending.

but off the top of my head, summer tires worth buying:

    1) Falken Azenis 615

    2) Hankook z212

3)Kumho Ecsta MX (dark horse candidate, wears about between the hankooks and the azenis, grip is also in the middle there too, a very good tire)

4)Advan Neova (WAY TOO EXPENSIVE, good tire though)

    5) Potenza RE070 (great if you can get them off an STi, a total ripoff if purchased new)

I'm trying to do my research right now to see whats out there. After reading some of the reviews on the mac boards, it sounds like there's some good ones out there. Specifically the neovas, but those things look like they're $$!

Those brakes set me back a bit, I'm halfway considering just running the re92s for now just to save money (I doubt that idea will last long though).

Maybe the potenza re-01r also. Theyre a bit expensive in 18s compared to the other tires on the list, but $160 for 245/40/17s is decent.
