Ok...Has anyone 'round here got a torque converter in their 4eat? I think I saw one in a "what are your mods" thread. Basically, I wanna know how you like it. Do you have to buy a used one or swap the one you have, or can you just buy one outright from protorque? What's the stall speed you use? Did you get a valvebody upgrade and a tranny cooler? and an overall cost estimate for the mod. :) I have reasearched the nasioc forum for this info, and I'm just looking for a local opinion. Plus, I never did verify if you could just buy one from protorque. I went on their site, and that's what it appears you can do, but there's no actual confirmation.
    Thanks,

i had one in my wrx. loved it .got it from protorque but sent mine in to have it moded. protorque was one of the beast places to go to . vary vary nice to work with and would recomend and go back to them again. i know ipt dose them to and they can do the valvebody and alot of other stuff to. had todd put it in for $350 and cant remember what i payed protorque. they do recomend doing the valvebody to but u dont need to and there is still a big change from the stock one. drives normal untell u step on it. alot of fun off the line.oh and i think u have to send yours in to have it modded or u can do a drop ship to ware u buy a stock one from someone and have it shipped to them and the when u take yours out u sell yours then. i had bad luck with that and ended up sending mine in any way.

Yeah, Jorge and the whole nasioc forum are saying, "go with the protorque TC, the IPT Valvebody, and the hayden 403 Transcooler". I Just would like some local opinions/experience on the whole thing. I like my 4EAT, but I really like the control of a manual. I don't necessarily want to sell my car and get a manual though. So, i'm just researching the idea of the torque converter. If I can just buy the TC from PT and throw it in, along with upgrading the valvebody and the Transcooler, I think I'm just gonna do that. :) Then of course upgrade the turbo and all the rest of it, and turn the scoob into a 12sec 4EAT!!! muwahahah! (At least low 13's) ;)

I think you will find that those would be great mods. WRX1 has both the VB and the TC I think he did a cooler as well. Mnautomatic has a TC and no VB I believe. The best thing is you can load the boost at a dead stop. When you let off the brake the car will be like one of those new mag-lev roller coasters! Can you say 60foot times!

I love my ProTorque TC. I was kicking myself for not doing it any earlier. It is the best mod possible for a 4eat by far. Definately get a transcooler for it as during the summer the tranny can get mighty warm and the VB is not necessary till ya get a bigger turbo in my opinion. You can not buy a TC from protorque either, you must send in one to get modded so look around nasioc cause TC pop up all the time. IPT is the same deal with the TC and VB, gotta send em in. This may all seem quite pricey but you will not be disappointed once you have completed the mods

Ahh!!! Sweet. There's the answer I've been searching for!! Ok, Now I can plan for the future of my little 4EAT! MNAutomatic - What stall speed are you at? I tested my car earlier, and it seemed to break loose at about 2200-2400.
    Thanks a bunch,

Well, I have the tc mod, the vb mod, and a tranny cooler with amsoil synth in it. I would sa they you are fine with the stock vb till you upgrade turbo's. iirc, the stall on the tc is somewhere around 3800-4000. You really don't notice the tc still you mash the gas, then it just spins up and the takes off.

I am running the largest b&m cooler I could get (think it is for a 48-50,000 truck). The tc mod is the best mod you could do it a auto. I will garrantee that is the wrx came that way for the factory, they would sell alot more of them.

yeah...I just did the standard stall for the TC. I havn't had a cooler on mine at all during the whole summer and I could definately see my temps rising on my oil temp gauge. I would say get the cooler and just do it cause they dont really cost that much after doing the TC mod. I plan on getting that done once I can find a VB, things are impossible to find

well, that is a HUGE can of worms. Basically the other part of the tc is connected to the flywheel, and the inner hub is connected to the input shaft of the tranny. The only thing that connects the 2 pieces together is the tranny fluid. When the mod the tc, they change the pitch of the blades on the inside so it slips a little more. It is just like taking 2 fans and pointing them at each other. then you turn on 1 fan, and as the air pushes the blades on the 2nd fans, it will start to spin. Now, the way the 1st fan moves the ait, and the way the 2nd fans recieves the moving air determines the slippage that you get. that is a VERY basic description of how it works.

MNautomatic, I have a vb sitting in my garage that is ready to ship out to ipt to get modded (or I could sell ya my modded vb if you are looking for one that is already done).

Well, one con is that the girlfriend gets tired of hearing about it ;) just search nasioc for "protorque torque converter" and you should come up with plenty of info on it. Or projectwrx. Jorje has a nice write-up on his experience with the torque converter. Basically, you gain responsiveness in the throttle. You should be able to drop about a second on your 1/4 mile times. From a dead stop, With brake-torqueing you put your car into boost before you launch. Increasing the chances of beating the minivan to the merging lane. ;) at least, that's the rumor. I'm sure someone else can explain it to you better. But, I'm all-in, if I can at least launch more like, or better than a manual. Then, I can live and love my 4EAT :)

Well, with my current half-assed tune, I can just mash the gas and once the turbo and such spools, it will break all 4 tires loose. The tc mod is the best thing to do to the 4eat, even better then exhaust.

If rippin all four tires off the start sounds like a good time, you might wanna try a high stall TC. Your differentials may not approve though!....of course, this is just from the info I've read. I have no actual real world experience with the TC. .......yet

I can not wait to get that VB WRX1, I am basically copying your set up if you dont mind. I am ordering my 18g sometime this week or next. I can not wait to be able to break my tires loose with a 4EAT(gonna shut up a lot of people that rip on my car). Let me know which one you wanna let go russ. I may not be able to pay you immediately seeing how I am chicago for school but hopefully we can work something out. Let me know.
