Yang, I use Redline in mine, you can get it almost anywhere in town, but if you dont know, I can direct you to my friend who has shop that services F1 cars. C
Is red line safe with my tranny ? I heard they are kinda bad in the long run. Is synthetic for daily driving or more like racing, autX? I haven't really done any hard-core stuff yet*. I dont want to go with synthetic unless its safe, well for me at least
I can get ya some amsoil that is syncho friend for my cost. It comes out to $6 per quart. Let me know. Russ
Yang, What do u consider SAFE, I'm not as hardcore as you, if you know what I mean, considering your most recent experience. Your a funny guy. Ok, on a serious note, Redline is safe, along with many other synthetic fluids out there, it really does not matter what you go with, whats important is the grade of what ever brand you go with, just make sure you check with your owners manuel so you know what weight to get and how much to use. You many want to consider doing your own research and find out what works best for what your needs are. Enjoy, C

I used Amsoil in mine... made is a heck of a lot quieter and smoother... 75w90 I believe... I would recommend it... a buggy ran the same in his 04 Sti
I'm not sure if my problem was related to anything, but I had to have my 1st and 2nd gear synchros replaced about a month after switching to Redline 75w-90ns gear fluid a while back. This was when the car was completely stock, and I don't abuse the tranny at all.
if your wanting to smooth out your tranny...synthetic isnt the way to go, if you want to stop grinds, GM syncromesh is teh hotness, works for me for the last 30K miles, no grinds!

sythetic does alot better job lubing things, but it does it too well, mostly if your tranny is already getting a little worn, in other words, if your having grinds right now, synthetic WONT help, it will make it worse
I have put ~50k on Redline in the RS (some know that it's only use is abuse). I would have to say that the nay-sayers should have there tranny checked before putting in fluid...that way you know that your tranny is going to go anyway, and you don't blame the fluid. (not directed at anyone here) } Oh, and I have been using Redline in the STi for ~15k with no issues. My vocal $0.02
i say nay from experience, all cars are different, pete, chime in and voice your love for the syncromesh also

The latest "super-mix" is 3 parts MT-90 and 1 part shockproof lightweight. Also, what is this "experience" that you are speaking of? Did you know the tranny was perfect before you put the Redline in? Is there evidence that the gear oil caused the failure? Like I posted previously, people like to "blindly" blame the oil rather than find the real cause... maybe, you can prove me wrong in this case (and I switch my fluid ASAP). I have seen a lot of reasons for trannies failing, but I haveyet to see the evidence that a particular oil caused failure... With so many tranny failures on the WRX, it appears pretty logical that there is an outside influence independent of the oil. One thread I read this weekend noted that many of the rebuilds the particular poster had performed had stock fluid and it was old, leaving sludge behind. While I do not claim to be any sort of expert, go through and compile all of the reports of tranny failure and look for how many are even running Redline...once again, I believe there is a different root cause and Redline takes some flak for that. Well, looks like I am up to ~$9.00 worth of opinions...time for a new bottle of Redline.
my experience was i had grinds in 1-3 with regular 75w gear old, then i switched to mobile synthetic, i had grinds in EVERY gear, regardless of temp, or speed, and im not ragging on redline, im ragging on synthetic in general, i switched to syncromesh as a last resort before tranny rebuild, no grinds whatsoever in any gear at any time, i could put it into first at 40 if i wanted to, no grinds. Im sure if you used redline since your car was new, or any synthetic for that matter you probably wouldnt be having any problems right now

quote:
Originally posted by AWDimprezaL sythetic does alot better job lubing things, but it does it too well, mostly if your tranny is already getting a little worn, in other words, if your having grinds right now, synthetic WONT help, it will make it worse

ahh... now we are tracking... so we are on the same boat.... yep I would agree no amount of any good lubes would replace crunched metal.. ha ha ha
but you also have to remember that certain lubes are not syncro friendly. Amsoil make 4 different gear lubes now, and 2 of them are not synco friendly (too slippery), and they just release a syncomesh formula. I know erdline and royal purple also have synco/non-syncro formulas. So you just can't say that all synth fluids are no good, you have to specify what fluid you are refuring too. Russ
Can anyone comment on this? I am due for an oil and differential fluid change soon. Instant Valvoline is charging about $50 for full synthetic oil change and $50 for rear diff oil change. For $20 more I can get the complete package. http://www.redlineoil.com/team_gear.asp Appreciate any input

The "package" is for the oil only, while Inst Valvoline is including the labor (and very likely a cheaper synthetic). That aside, a quart of Redline goes for ~$14... for a STi, you need 5 qts, if I remember correctly. That comes to ~$70, plus the quart for the diff...~$85 rounded off. Now the questions are... will you do it yourself? If so, then you have a far better deal than going to Valvoline. The important question regarding the "package" is; do you need all of that? Water Wetter, Fuel cleaner, funnel and a hat will cost you an additional $35 when purchased as a package... I personally have never used Water Wetter (not too hot here, nor do I run really long track sessions of 30+ min) or fuel system cleaner so they would be wasted on me, but you may have different plans... Well, if you were able to follow all that, you should be qualified to change it yourself... Go ahead a buy 5 qts of 7w90NS and 1 qt of 75w90 and go for it... or if you are looking for a little better mix, try the combo I listed previously (MT90 and Shockproof). Of course, there is no consensus as to whether or not you should be using Redline so do so at your own risk. (I use it almost exclusively, but I have tried Motul as well and like it too)
