i have a 96' impreza 5 spd and i just noticed today that it whines unusually loud. i got stuck for the first time last night (high centered on a snowdrift) and i dont know if that did anything to the tranny. i dont know if anything is wrong but i tought i would post to find out. thanks
does it sound like a dogbox gear? heres what a dogbox sounds like: if not then i would assume its a chattering cluttering noise...does it get quieter when you are at idle with your clutch in? then when you let your clutch out does it get louder and sound like (not grinding) but churning more or less? let me know because i blew my tranny and i know some warning signs.
if it's louder when turning it may be a bearing.. if when you got high sided the wheel took a hit, you may have damaged a bearing... if not park it somewhere warm and see if it melts ice or something out of moving parts...
Get the car in a heated garage before you do anything. Cars w/ snow in wierd places can make even weirder noises. So heat it up and see if that goes away = D
my car whines like hell when i get done doing some dorifo action but usually goes away for some reason, change the fluid see if that helps
ok i drove to church today and noticed that when turning left or right at a stoplight it whines but only when the clutch is engaged, when it isnt engaged the noise isnt there.
Why would a whining noise when turning be related to the tranny? My guess(JUST a guess), would be power steering. I just had my 02 PS pump replaced. If you were cranking the wheel and doing doughnuts...your pump is burnt.
i just recently rebuilt the pump (about 2 weeks back) and i was helped by a subaru tech at morries bp, and the noise is only when the clutch is engaged. When i turn with the clutch pushed in or in neutral, no noise. I was thinking the front diff maybe?
