ok so driving my car tonight and when i was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and for a split second i herd a little noise and then my engine was only reving when i hit the gas. so i put it in 3rd and pulled onto a side street. i tried to get into every gear but it wouldnt work...i thought maybe my clutch went out but after turning the car off and then on i could only get it into anything above 2nd. so i know that i lost 1st and 2nd (as far as i know) and when i drove it home i could hear something in the transmision rattle just a tiny bit when i let off the gas.

my main question is what kind of costs should i be planning for as far as repair? should i maybe try and find a totally new transmision?

    help me out folks!

Check junyards for a used tranny. If you rebuild it you are looking at $2K minimum, for a brand new tranny from subaru it would be about $4K.

the year make and model of the car would help some on pricing.

there are a few options out there. What are you goals for the car? We can help you determine which gearing is right for you.

i just want my gears back...im not looking for anything special...just dont want my trans to lock up if i drive it now. and i really dont have a ton of money. whatever will work and last me a while. does the stock rs trans unable to handle power at all? i really dont beat on my car so its kinda lame that i went out like it did.

from what i hear (im no expert) alot of people with just stock WRX'S with 5 speeds the tranny takes a dump more often than not and you got a swap so you have more power than normal.

ive been taking looks around and ive found impreza trannys for around 500. im sure id need a shop to instal it but i might have a small chance to get the tools needed to do it myself. as far as getting a tranny im looking for anything what will work. and trust me i dont use all of the power the car has so getting something that i had before isnt the biggest deal. the one that just broke has nearly 160K and has held up until now. ive got an upgraded clutch so the tranny will be safer than if id had the stock clutch right? i just cant afford to go ahead and order a 6speed or an RA tranny. just trying to get by

If you need something to get you by for cheap, there's a few NA awd 5mt trannies from old legacy's for $400 or less on car-part.com. I'm sure you could get the diff with it for cheap too.

You would maybe need to convert to a cable setup, but i have a pedal box and cable. Add a clutch and go...

Nope. An upgraded clutch will increase the holding power, which means less give for your gears. In other words, they're harder on your gearset. If it's the original RS transmission, it might be harder to find than a regular WRX transmission on the used market. I see a lot of used WRX gearsets/transmissions but not a lot of RS ones. I did just see an ad on the front page of RS25.com for upgraded gearsets for 1250 shipped, you'd just have to find someone to do the rebuild.

before condemning the tranny check the entire shift linkage all the way down to the tranny for any loose connections. Could also be a bent shift fork.

i have the stock '00 rs tranny 5 speed. if they would work id really consider that idea.... but it all depends on if they work for my car. if this had happened to me 3 months from now i would just look for upgraded stuff like a dogbox. but this happened at a bad time.

if it's just another tranny you want, there are a few out there.

    5-SPEED tranny options for you:
    '98-current Forester non-turbo
    '98-'04 Impreza 2.5RS
    '05 2.5RS SPORT
    '96-'99 Legacy 2.5GT
    '97-current Legacy OUTBACK/OUTBACK non-turbo (shorter 5th gear)

there's a 5-speed '98 (?) OBS at calvary auto salvage right now....might be worth giving them a call.

Sweet BugI.....if he doesn't take them, I would like your 5th gearset. depending on what kind of money you're looking for it.

yeah im going to go with a entire different tranny cuz i dont want mine to break again so easily with the super high miles im in. plus then i have a transmission to totally rebuild and maybe get some straight cuts into it.

any subaru 5-speed will be a pretty straightforward swap. only things to keep an eye out for, are clutch type (hydraulic vs cable. I believe the list Fuji posted is the hydraulic ones, which would be the same as yours) and rear diff ratio.

so i might need a new rear diff as well depending on the tranny i pick. which ones will use the same ratio as what i have on mine?

how much of a pain would it be to just get a wrx tranny? might have less miles on the gears that way...but idk if id need to change anything els to get it to work. like the read diff.

.... this sucks but im trying to plan this out while i save the money for the transmission

yeah....im not talking about just gears...does the wrx grearbox bolt in with little issue? because i already have the wrx engine in the car....

just in the idea that i might get a newer transmission that way.

im using a 1.8l impreza trans in my legacy, which was originally an auto

you wont have problems with a wrx trans.

only problems you might run into, is the clutch setup. lucky for you, your RS will already be hydraulic, but there may be issues of push-type vs pull....etc.

you won't find anything at upull with a hydraulic clutch setup.

I put an RS tranny in my car, RS is hydraulic, mine is cable. I think the only thing you need to swap it the bracket on the transmission. The bell housing is the same.

As far as gear ratios, I think the list Fuji posted is all 4.111 that would match your RS diff. The 98 OBS 5 spd would be 3.9 so you'd need a rear diff as well. WRX trans will bolt in, but again you'll need the rear diff.

The tranny will NOT have issues when installing with the right person doing the work.
HOWEVER, THAT TRANNY DOES NOT RUN THE SAME FINAL DRIVE AS THE ONE YOU CURRENTLY HAVE.
This is why I didn't list Impreza Outback.

what will that difference affect? would i need to buy anything els?

from what i understand the final drive on the 02outback is the same as the final drive on the 02wrx.

yeah i kinda answered my own question there. it looks like i found a 98 forester 2.5L. as far as from what fuji said, that one will work
