I've been having ap roblem with my 02 outback vdc. When I start the car up in the morning it runs fine but the second light I stop at is a hill and if I get stuck at a red light, when I take my foot off the brake and begin to press on the gas my rpms go up as usual but the car begins to roll backwards down the hill (really thrilling for the people behind me.)
Eventually after anywhere between three and 30 seconds I feel a slight jerk forward and it engages into first gear. I just got it back from the dealer and they fixed a broken bearing, something about how that would fix me problem. The strange grating noise is gone and the cars performace is better, so they did fix that problem but when I told the guy at the dealership I thought there was a transmition problem as well, but I don't think they looked into that.
I have checked my transmission fluid and that is at the right level, I'm just not knowledagable enough about my subaru to know what else it might be. Any ideas out there?

btw this only happens after the car has been sitting overnight. after it gets warmed up it behaves the rest of the day.

Sounds like a fluid level problem. When you check the fluid, is is hot or cold??

sounds like while it is sitting, the torq-converter is draining out and the 20-30 sec is about the amount of time it would take for the pump in the trany to fill it back up. Easiest way to check and see if the that is it would be to drive the car for 20-30 min(street/freeway, doesn't matter) park it on level ground, shut it off and check the level of the fluid, note where it is at(don't worry if it is in the correct are or not. we are not checking the operating level but the stagnant level). So it will/should read overfull, just note where it is at. then wait an hour or so and check it again with out starting it see if the level has risen a lot(if you are concerned with the definition of a lot, don't be. if it is draining back you will learn the definition.) If it is the close to the same level you can rule out a bad torq converter and pump but means there are other Issues in the trany that need to be looked into. If it is back draining it is part of an aging automatic. It is not right but does not pose any major/fatal problems. It can be over come by warming up the car and shifting into neutral for 20-30 seconds for the pump to fill the torq converter again be for going into drive/reverse.

also now when I'm coasting the rpms go from less then 1 to just over one and the car kind of jerks then coasts then jerks again.

hah. just what my husband would love to hear!
Unfortunatly the problem is sporadic and now doesn't appear to be related to warming up or not. It isn't consistent so I'm having a hard time figuring out what is causing the problem.

I think the best solution is he drives the outback and I get his rs with the jdm wing. :)
