Transmission Problems - Help!!!

    Looking for direction!!!

    Details of Car:
    2006 WRX TR
    72,000 miles (lots of freeway miles)
    Open ECU Tune (DB Performance)
    Full Exhaust Turbo Back
    Eibach Coilover Suspension

    Problem:
    Went to shift into reverse and would not go. After continually trying to shift into
    reverese the car locked into a gear and will not shift into any gear now.
    Car is in subaru shop where they want to open up the transmission and see whats wrong. They think I may need to do a rebuild or need to buy a new one. The rough cost
    depending on whether I rebuild or buy a new transmission could range $4,500 to
    $6,000.

    Questions:
    If you were in my shoes who would you talk to about this?

    Or do I just let Subaru do the work? (My concern with the Subaru
    dealer is that I would be paying top dollar for everything)

    Any suggestions or ideas are welcomed!

    Buying a 6 speed, along with all the needed parts would end up more than $4500 guys, unless you are buying the whole drivetrain from a wrecked STi.

    You have to remember about a clutch, shifter assembly, hydraulic parts, and driveshaft. Depending on the year of the 6-speed, you may even need a rear differential.

    Transmission work is never cheap, and from the sounds of it, you have a broken or bent shift fork, and possible gear damage. You may be able to source a used trans for cheaper than the work, but then again...you might be purchasing a pile of junk.

    you have a couple different options depending on what you want to do with the car. i would tell you to talk to matt at RS motors

    Take it to a tranmission shop, not the dealer. As far as I know, they do not rebuild tranmissions there, just replace. A proper transmission serice facility should be more than capable of fixing what is wrong with the transmission without replacing the whole unit.

    We (at Tonka) do whatever the correct fix is. We estimate it both ways, and have rebuilt many transmissions here. We don't just replace unless the whole trans isn't worth the parts or labor to rebuild.

    I should also add that for that price range they are telling me they will be replacing
    the flywheel and clutch too.

    I love the car and want to keep it. I'm not quite sure how far I want to go with additonal
    modifications being that it is my daily driver right now.

    I have 233 WHP (according to the Dyno at DB Performance) and wonder if I replace the transmission with a new WRX transmission or a rebuilt transmission if it will hold up or if I will be back here in this position in a year.

    Now's the time to choose if you want to go with the tranny you want to drive with knowing what you want to do with the car. Daily drive and nothing more than passing cars on the freeway, get it rebuilt. Track/lapping days, 6spd, dragging 1320/wangan then PPG or '07+ 6spd.

    My 6spd cost me roughly $5600 total with fluids. Can't forget the axle boots I had to repair and I broke 1 rear STi axle on a launch going over a crank on the road; wheel hop! I love it though!!! JDM DCCD 6spd!

    Who did all that for ya? FYI - I love to drive but do not work on my cars other than changing the fluids, tires, filters etc.

    Are you planning on doing anything else to the car in terms of power mods? Is this car your DD?

    If the answer is "no" and "yes" to those questions above, my honest advice would be to source another stock 5-speed and then have RS or a local shop install it for you. 5-speeds are in general just fine for stage 2, even with the extra torque of the 2.5L. In addition, this is going to be your cheapest option.

    Alternatively, there are also some more modestly priced aftermarket transmission options out there (talking 2-3k for the unit), if you just need something reliable for the power you have now and nothing more.

    The MFactory gearset is probably the best option out of that bunch.

    I installed the whole thing myself. The tranny was heavy though!!! Weighed more than me!!! Floor jack helps!!!

    Don't forget to rear the sticky up top, it also helps in choosing trannies as well.

    So where does a guy go to find these tranny's whether it be an STI or Stock 5 Speed Tranny's???
