turbo flutter

if I really get on it I hear that cute little noise...

NOW..

is this cute noise bad?
is it tunable?
is it just one of those little subaru things subarus do... and just learn to live with it and love it?

 

Does it sound like a quick (like maybe 10hz) flicking/fluttering sound? If so, it's probably wastegate flutter.

And:

1) No, it's not tunable. It's a mechanical sound caused by your car attempting to keep and hit target boost.

2) No, it's not bad, it's perfectly normal. It's quite loud on my '06 with the TXS 4" downpipe.

3) Yes, just love it.

didn't think it was harmfull but I saw some "messing with the wastegate" threads.. and would rather ask then dink and mess something up...

 

yeah, you are hearing the wg open and close quickly to control boost

 

If chattering when you get of gas it could be bad. I had an hks bov that did that to my car.

 

But I don't think that would be caused by the wastegate...that would be your bov fluttering.

 

It's called compressor surge, and yeah, it's bad.

 

Thought I would add, installing this damn inlet has been by far the suckfest of all installs so far.
